British Asians make up 7% of the UK population. However, only 0.25% of professional footballers are British Asians.

Possibly Asian families are more determined to push the path for their children to be more academic than sporty.

They prefer cricket or to be a doctor, accountant or lawyer. Football or anything other than cricket is not encouraged by parents.

As an asian person, it will always be this.

Asian families understand that education is the biggest ticket out of poverty, so they will encourage this.

Mindsets are changing, but to be honest, if you're not part of an academy in your teens, you can see why sports is pushed back for children.

Hard to represent a group of people if they don’t want to be represented. If an Asian person wanted to be a footballer it’s up to them and only them. Ridiculous to assume otherwise

There aren’t that many Asians playing at the highest level of the men’s game period. The lack of British Asians doing so doesn’t look out of place when viewed with the broader context in mind.

How many top players has there been in the last decade from Asia? Son, Kagawa, Park, Ono, Nakumura, Honda, Okazaki, Yoshida...?

Cant think of many more that have played at PL level or equivalent, though I’m sure I’m missing some obvious ones!

Asian players are not seen by the clubs as good enough physically to challenge for the top clubs, and no one takes a punt on them. Agents/scouts don't go and hunt for Asian players. By Asian I mean, Indian, Pakistani and Bengali. I have seen some cracking Asian players at grass root, specially two players who were astounding talent, but it is an English heritage that they saw these players as beneath them even though they were outstanding.
The myth that Asian families want their sons/daughters to be doctors, or in IT, is a myth made and kept alive by the Media.

Lots of talent going wasted

It's the truth, Greg was a prat phrasing it the way he did

But the truth is you are likely to see more Asians in Accounts and IT than on the football pitch

If families encouraged their kids to play footy and pursue a career in it then I would have no doubt we'd see more pros. The other factor is the talent amongst the Asian communities is just not there, if there was then we'd have seen a Messi Singh, Patel or Akbar equivalent.

Even in cricket the Asian Brits are good to average, none world beaters.

Other than Son none of those are really top players. Asians generally don’t tend to be that good at football.

There are many issues, some covered in that Asian parents tend to value education more. There is also little clear pathways for players. How many are actually scouted or recruited at a young age?

Nadiem Amiri is already a German international. The Dutch had Luciano Narsingh and his brother playing in their top flight and the former having international caps. How are these nations better able to do this than the UK?

posted on 12/11/20

Would Nadiem Amiri have made it as a player if he was in England rather THAN Germany?

I think there are enough Asians in the music/media/film industry to suggest this is by no means the only reason.

The Asian parents wanting education or cricket (stereotypical) is a myth now and a easy get out clause. First generation yes but now 2nd generation are no different to white/black parents and if your kid has talent they will pursue it.

Truth is coaches don't want to pick Asian kids.

Seriously?
So parents will pursue it if their child has talent but coaches won’t pursue it if the same child has talent? Coaches are anti-Asian?

Having checked, there’s a few I’d forgotten about that had good careers in Italy for example. I agree that only Son (and probably Kagawa for a little while) are/were ‘top’ players. I suppose what I meant is ‘top’ as in playing in the top leagues in Europe.

Any player playing in the premier divisions of England, France, Italy, Holland, Germany, Spain or Portugal is an elite level player. Obviously, not all elite level players are equally as good, but regardless, to be playing in those leagues (or even the division below) puts you at the sharp end of the men’s game.
