Nations League 20/21

in the REAL competition, Congratulations to Scotland for their achievement this international week.

This rubbish nations league stuff needs to end. its pointless and boring. what exactly is there to play for. an ultra complex stupid qualifying route to just exactly what?

England v ireland
England v iceland.

who gives a stuff.

lets get back to meaningless glamour friendlies and ACTUAL qualifiers to actual tournaments.

Let me be CRYSTAL clear, "in February 2012 it was agreed between UEFA and the European Club Association (ECA) that the international friendly schedule would be reduced from 12 to 9 matches a year with the August round of international friendlies in the UEFA confederation abolished from 2015

The aspiration to eliminate friendlies in favour of a more competitive tournament has been welcomed by many football commentators."

Reality: International teams insert a THRID game into the week and keep the friendlies and the extra tournament.

not only are elite players flogged to death but the true horror of this rubbish is the small teams get faff all out of it and the 3 or 4 big European teams will share a big slush fund.

the FA took 8million out of the last nations league and that vanished into the usual slush funds.

disgraceful. Can't believe fans fall for this rubbish.

This is only a reality because of COVID though. The play-offs had to be completed over the last two breaks, hence the 3rd game. It is not the norm.

This rubbish nations league stuff needs to end. its pointless and boring.
=======
It has actually been proved to be popular across Europe. It gives nations competitive games that traditional qualifying rarely does. It has given meaning to the minnows who would normally spend 2 years getting hammered.

in the REAL competition, Congratulations to Scotland for their achievement this international week.

Not sure of your understanding, but the play-offs that allowed Scotland to progress were formed by the Nations League results.

Personally prefer the Nations League to "traditional qualifying" - which tends to be a cakewalk for the top seeds and damage limitation for 2 or 3 teams per group.

Brilliant. Could easily pass for a Barry comment that.

Does anybody care about international football anymore?

The World Cup is great, Euros is good. Everything is drab.

Copa America >>>>> Euros.

Although it will be interesting to know how you would pick the teams who play in the World Cup and Euros. Invite only?

Only invite those who qualified for next year's euros from now on. It's a good reflection of what teams consistently qualify and therefore deserve to be there going forward.

Seems fair Barry.
Maybe use France 98 qualifiers for future World Cups?

Personally prefer it to the CL if I’m absolutely honest. Love big international tournaments has a magic about it, the CL has become really stale these days

San Marino have gone two games without defeat for the first time in their history. Nations League bringing light to the minnows of football in these dark times.

The World Cup perhaps

Nations league is the best thing that ever happened to scotland. No more meaningless friendlies, it means every game we play has an importance. Tomorrow if we win we will go into a world cup play off. I'll say no more.

The World Cup especially, but also the Euros.

They're mainstream events. People who never usually watch football watch the games.

With club football, no one who isn't already a football fan actually cares.

Even the big UCL and PL games don't have any kind of aura or mystic about them anymore. Club football just feels stale and irrelevant nowadays. That's partly why the big clubs are trying to create a super league.

My understanding is that there are only 2 WC qualifying play-off places available through the NL and nothing will be guaranteed after the conclusion of these matches.

It works better with the Euros than it does with the WC.

Yeah that’s my understanding though I think if the a groups pan out as expected scotland might find themselves with a good chance of a play off spot, as the a lister bu guns will have qualified? Fack knows, it is confusing. Though I’d be better to see someone like wakes, Scotland,or Austria etc at the WC rather than Panama or Honduras etc.
