Really!!
I think you really need to re-evaluate and rethink your interpretation of Souness comments, can't see your issue with him...is there an issue with Phillips having a shot outside the penalty area?!
I thought at the time his comments seemed a bit odd, but then I haven't really seen TOO much of Phillips.
Were his comments right, regarding Phillips being a good striker of the ball etc?
How often does he actually get into positions at the edge of the box, or coming into the box late, because in the England games I watched he didn't really find himself in those areas often.
I just assumed Souness had a few notes on various players and some key stats and just lazily looked and made a comment that he could/should score more?
Well he has the ability to score goals, but that's not his role. Better free kick conversion maybe, but a long with defenders, never something I'd think about when evaluating his game.
Faith your thoughts seem to emphasis formulas and playing systems, 442, 3331 and 433...it seems your football opinions stray into a straitjacket of sorts, hence your wonderment and over the top flattery of Bielsa's tactics of Leeds players interchanging positions, as if it's only just been invented....players don't have to be so rigid in the game, in their for example defensive positions, that they're not expected to score.

You’re spot on Mike. He doesn’t get into positions often because he shouldn’t. Just like the rest of the players on the list.
Goals is not something to judge him on.

Most clubs do still stick to a very rigid formation actually. Bielsa definitely deserves the credit he gets. And actually we barely had the interchange of positions under Bielsa prior to this season. Definitely not in his first season.
And while you clearly agree with me that Leeds are now not really a specific formation. That the formation if you like is fluid it doesn’t really matter. You will note that Phillips is the key position/role that doesn’t change. He is always the pivot in attack and the block in front of the defence without the ball. Keeping Phillips or whoever is the 4 so rigid is what allows the rest of the team to be so fluid. Hence me disagreeing with the comment Souness made, along with most of the world.

You should take a look at the heat maps of Phillips and you will see that he is barely ever in the area of the pitch in which you can shoot from.
seems to me far too many have never played the game and have no idea
Its great when people sit in a studio, or even at home and say what people should be doing!..
Today's football isn't like it was when Souness played, he scored some in his time, but would he have scored as many playing today's game?..
I don't think so!..
Game is much faster, that second or 3 he got you don't get these days, so, instead of being able to do what he did players are rushing their shots or relying on reflexes!..
Reflexes take a lot of controlling and rushing is caused because of how fast people close you down these days!..
Balls when people say so and so should have done this and that and the other, some strikes might be bad play, but others are forced and they're a little harder to do!..
Souness should think on, times have changed!..
He scored 7 from midfield in 2017/18 and so he has the ability to score more but his role has changed, he is part of the defensive unit now and the only way he will score more is from set pieces. I think it was poetic justice that he scored the centenary goal but would much rather he was doing what he is doing now than scoring lots of goals and neglecting his defensive role. By and large, I think most of us are happy for him to keep doing what he is doing.

"A point so good I made it twice."
Better twice than not at all!.
Souness it seems is being quoted out of context, his premise was that because of the amount of possession Leeds have in most games he perhaps could get more forward and position himself for a shot at goal, seems a reasonable opinion to me, no one has suggested he should neglect his defensive duties.
If he does score sometime the fantasy tactical formulas will go up in smoke....my God a defensive player scoring a goal, whatever next!

Why will the ‘fantasy tactical formulas’ go up in smoke? Whatever that phrase means?
No one will have a problem with Phillips scoring a goal. I’m not sure what you are trying to say tbh.
The problem is criticising a player for not getting enough goals when there is a very very good reason why he doesn’t score more. And to adapt Phillips’ role to allow him to score more goals would be suicidal.
As a side note I’m enjoying actually discussing this as a tactical conversation rather than just having dogs like before. I’m sorry that I reacted the way I did yesterday. I felt the your comment didn’t make sense in response to the article I wrote and was an attempt to just cause controversy for no reason. I still don’t know what it is you were referring to tbh. But all the same I much prefer discussing football with you.
Problem with Phillips getting forward more is he'd be doing more running!..
Fatigue?..
Better leaving him doing what he's doing, the likes of Ayling and Dallas are doing more than enough!..
Faith, a think NJS's fantasy tactical formulas is a shot at fantasy football!..
I don't feel Souness was criticising Phillips, complimentary really.
I think there was an over reaction to the result v Everton, more workmanlike victory imo.
I thought your article too was an over reaction, would you have written such a praiseworthy article of Bielsa's tactics had we lost?
Going into the Everton game we had 1 pt from a possible 9, our goals against isn't good, we had drifted further down the table.
The point I'm making is how do Bielsa's tactics of interchangeable tactics and man on man marking translate when we lose, when we may still drift downwards?
I'm alarmed that such as Rodrigo, one of the really few creative players is being left to play a peripheral part, a workmanlike player preferred to run around all game, is this Bielsa policy for the rest of the season?
How long is this man to man marking going to last, how many defeats will we have to endure?
In my opinion you can use this tactic occasionally but not on a permanent basis.
