We win = the manager has done a good job today.

We lose = the manager has done a bad job today and should be sacked.

------------------------------------------------

Some on both sides of this are as bad as each other.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yeah, agree. It's tedious as fack and a distraction from what's actually happening on the football pitch.

AWB has been getting caught out at the back post ever since he turned up at the club. It’s not because of tactics, it’s because he lacks awareness.

This obsession with putting blame on all issues on the football pitch on tactics is ridiculous.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It's because the discussion is only ever about the manager.

We win = the manager has done a good job today.

We lose = the manager has done a bad job today and should be sacked.

That's the typical level of sophistication of the debate on here right now.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Bit unfair that

We rely on individual brilliance has oft been used even when we win.

The flaws are so apparent even the discussion with ex utd players is saying so

Can't all be wrong

Jinja, but I’ve never denied this is an issue at United. It’s a massive problem. But AWB not being good enough in those facets of defending is an issue with the player. You’re blaming it on tactics, which is stupid.

The tactics aren’t to leave men in loads of space and miss headers, allowing it to drop to players in loads of space behind him. But he keeps doing it.

There is t any tactics from what we see week in week out.

AWB is just the fall guy today. Yet we acknowledge he does this week in week out. When and who addresses it?

Indeed it is. It just annoys me when people blame clear flaws in a footballer, and mistakes, on tactics. People used to do it with Mourinho as well. I felt sick having to defend him.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Tell me about it. I remember doing it in SAF's days, never mind the four since.

It's like people understand the manager to be playing PES or FIFA with the players.

"Fack, he should have hit the X button there, not Y!"

Of course there are tactics.

Why oh why do people say this?

"Right then lads. You know the drill: there's no plan again this week. Just go out there and try to kick the football into the opposition's goal. And try to stop them doing that to us if you can as well. Good luck!"

Mourinho is a good example of someone who took defenders under the cosh and improved them this far at Spurs.

Coaching and tactics

posted on 8/12/20

Individual errors cost us tonight but we're also not good enough as a collective either. I had no real quibble about the tactics and I think we have a comfy night tonight had we been solid and weathered the initial 15 mins.

There you go though. Frustrating but hopefully we can bounce back at the weekend. Great match to do it in.

tbf i think some of what fans are referring to as "tactics" is better explained by "coaching"...and if players do make the same mistake constantly, some of the blame for that lies on the manager/coaches.

do we look well coached at set pieces? well drilled in our movement? do our strikers look like they have been tutored by someone who was a very good striker himself? did find it odd when cavani came in and people said he could teach martial/greenwood how to move as a striker, can't ole do that himself?

Do you honestly see a plan, a structure, a style ?

Myself, rio, scholes and hargreaves disagree mate

I'm sure I read that ole doesn't really do much with the strikers. Can't remember what he said but he was quoted

This

We have no discernable style or structure in our play

It sounds like you don’t understand what tactics are, no offence.

Man United aren’t a very well coached/drilled side. That doesn’t mean we play without tactics. Whether the tactics are right or not is a different matter. But they exist.

He’s not a fall guy. It’s just an obvious issue with his game. Considering we don’t have another right back it’s difficult to take him out. I’m sure they’re trying to work on it in training, because it’s one of the most obvious weaknesses in his game. But sometimes these things don’t just get fixed in training, it can take a defender years and years to really iron out their weaknesses when it comes to awareness, and for lots of players they never do.

Non taken.

In simple terms to use the cambridge definition

A planned way of doing something

We dont seem to have a plan.

If we do it's relying on individual brilliance. Which is a tactic I guess

But that’s more down a multitude of issues that are to do with the players, manager and coaches, rather than there not being any tactics.

There’s always a plan.

The questions each week can include: is it an effective plan? Are the players executing the plan well? And if the plan isn’t working, can the coaching staff work out what to do to try to change the game?
