Molde would be nice for Ole

I think Poch will want to draw to Sociedad, as he spent a lot of his playing career in Spain and speaks the language fluently

Who's going to do the mandatory Young Boys joke?

Anyone?

Would be great for Ten Hag if we got Antwerp.

Molde would be good. We should go through comfortably, but if we go out the memes will be unreal.

I don’t know if they’ve ever actually been called Red Star Belgrade, I think that’s just what they were known as in English speaking countries. UEFA just started using the Serbian name rather than a translated one.

Same things happens with Sporting Lisbon. They’ve never had the city in the name of the club.

Red Star have a huge fan base in Sydney. The Croatia vs Serbia thing is still massive here 🤣

Indeed. But also plenty of cro’s and Serbs. Fun fact, more Greeks live in Melbourne than in anywhere but Athens.

Apparently Shaktar played for a draw deliberately against Inter so they could play in the Europa rather than try and win to get into the CL knockout rounds.

I highly doubt this is true. The money alone is enough of a reason to want to stay in the CL.

Like us though they do stand a chance of winning the EL whereas they had no chance of winning the CL like we didn't. So you can see why these rumours arise.

Don't think any CL team deliberately goes out in a sudden death scenario to not get the best possible result. It just doesn't happen

I watched the game and they had to win to make the CL later rounds but showed zero ambition at all. Were time wasting in the last 10 minutes when one goal would take them through

Krasnodar
Red Bull Salzburg
Dynamo Kyiv
Olympiakos

Those aswell.

It’s more lucrative dropping into the EL and going on a run to the final than it is being knocked out in the round of 16 in the CL.

There’s obviously no guarantee whatsoever that Shaktar will have a successful EL campaign. But there are universes in which they profit from dropping down.

I think we are at stage where we need to concentrate fully on the league. As we've seen before this competition is very disruptive in terms of league form, so I'd like to see play our back ups and keep our preferred first 11 fit for the league.

Financially though, I'm sure Ole will be getting pressure from above especially in these times. Would rather have crashed out altogether

That's an interesting thought. If teams are doing this, UEFA will have to look at idea of teams dropping into the EL from the CL. Always hated this rule, unfair to the clubs in the competition from the start.

Yeah, I’m not suggesting that any side *has* attempted to do it purposefully.

But it does seem strange that a side which roundly defeats - twice - a competitor in their group, knocking them out of the CL in the process, could see that same competitor not only go on to win a prestigious trophy, but also pocket many millions more on the way to doing so as a result.
