When the maximum wage was abolished in 1962.

Lets say there was now a maximum wage of a million a year (which is still alot of money for kicking a bag of wind around) then admission prices could be drastically cut and the top players would continue to boost their income with endorsements and would still comfortably earn the most.

Joe consumer is the winner.

Money would just go to already wealthy owners sadly

Ticket prices and tv package fees would need to be legislated. That would likely reduce revenues and in turn wages

The problem is capitalism without a free market. Every game's broadcast is a monopoly. The premier league is a monopoly.

Therefore, football is structurally destined to become more extractive of its consumer, with fans having less and less power in the exchange.

The PL going worldwide only accelerates the loss of power on our end as the market becomes wider.

It's just not our game in the way it was. But hey, Adidas are releasing great Arsenal fashion. Go buy it.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

I think you have a comment here that sounds very intelligent but doesn't mean a lot.

The Premier League is a free market. There is competition between Sky, BT Sport, Amazon, BBC, ITV and other providers. It is not a monopoly.

I would agree that it is capitalism, which rewards those who are successful fabulously but leads to huge inequality.

neo-liberal capitalism

football fans allowing themselves to be rinsed

dont get sky, etc.......they only charge the amount they do, because enough mugs buy it

people dont know the true value of things

Yep. Record audiences tune in to watch Eastenders and Coronation Street too. That doesn't make them good.

What really killed football is VAR.
When last did you really celebrate a goal?

Switching a TV on is not quite the same as somebody physically making the effort to get off their sofa, and actually go see a game. I take it that is something you have never done.

Yeah hate VAR! It is killing football. I would much rather the occasional unfair decision (even against Spurs/England) than not even being able to celebrate a goal for fear it will be ruled out.

Turns out Sepp Blatter for all his faults was right. He was against bringing in goal line technology because it would inevitably lead to VAR.

I think goal line technology is great but would happily get rid of it if we could also get rid of VAR.

I get the VAR killing off the euphoria fans feel when their team has just scored, but I noticed we are getting more used to it, and most of us, stay calm after a goal has been scored and wait for the ref's "final" whistle?
We seem to have adjusted to it...It will feel weird to go back to instant screams and jumping up and down

Isn't this almost the entire reason us fans even follow football? You say it as if it's nothing.

How do you know I said if it's nothing?
What do you want me to do?

It's over and VAR is in full force, so we like it or not, its the way it is right now

I want to see fan protests against VAR actually. It is that big an issue for me. I will never accept it and I will never be happy with it. We shouldn't have to get used to it and for football to be forever less enjoyable.

Yeah I bet no Liverpool fans celebrated Firmino’s winner two days ago.

Football is purely money driven and the authorities want nothing more than the best supported clubs (who generate them the most revenue) to be successful.

Just look at the way Pool and United games are refereed and the way these clubs are (almost always) given the benefit of doubt in key moments.

It is way more than just plain old luck, the statistics even back up the clear bias shown towards these two clubs.
