The problem with Trent its not about trying to compile a Top 5 or 10 list of RBs and excluding him. The issue with Trent and I say this as an England fan is the issues with his game. and there are so many more particular his positioning.
Just try and compare Trent's positioning and Ashley Cole and its miles apart. Thats where his game is supposed to be going, not his obvious technical attributes at long and short passing.
Granted he is badly out of form this season but even last season I was not convinced by Trent as an all round fullback.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Without entering into whether TAA is or isn't a world class full back, I'd say the role itself has evolved since Cole's playing days and now requires players in that position to have a far greater attacking bent to their game. Back in Cole's days it was mainly the Spanish sides who generally played their FBs as high up the pitch as is more commonly the case nowadays. Players like Dani Alves, Marcelo, or even Roberto Carlos before them, would often get rubbished by English fans because of it.
Apart from the overall changes in the role, each different set up/manager will require different things from their FBs. Even though it can look like it's the FB who's out of position, it's sometimes more the fault of whichever player was supposed to be providing cover for a marauding FB, or even of the system itself.
Although I don't watch Liverpool that much and I can't say what kind of form TAA's been in this year, it can also be a case of some players being better suited to high lines than deeper defences or vice versa.
In view of the above, like for like comparisons can be quite misleading.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
TAA has been indifferent/poor really throughout large parts of this season. Seems as if winning the title seems to have gone to his head and he's began to live in the hype of what Liverpool have achieved over the last couple of seasons. He's not the only youngster either, Jones at times has played with that chip on his shoulder as well. Not that they aren't willing to try and retain what Liverpool currently have or win trophies, but, like most teams who retain the title, I think you do end up playing with more of the tag of "being Champions" which will psychologically affect all players I'm sure.
To compare full backs now to full backs 10-15 years ago is just silly really. Full backs are more like wing backs or even wingers in teams these days whereas that wasn't so much the case a fair few years ago. I'd imagine TAA's positioning and defensive play is worse than most full backs at the top level from 15 years ago, like Ashley Cole, but his overall game and especially ball playing ability will be as good as most top midfielders from 15 years ago as well.

So, Liverpool have three times as many WC players as the other teams, but can only manage being joint top?
Looks like the manager is failing to get the best out of his squad.

If it was good enough for every scouser to bang on about if for weeks while Spurs were "joint top", then I think it's acceptable for atleast two of us to make the same gag on the one post.

Agreed. 'World class' is meaningless. But also the logic tends to be circular. A team wins the league and suddenly the star players are highly rated. I think e.g. Klopp deserves a lot of credit for creating a system and picking the right players for the respective roles, resulting in maximising their performance. I don't think Firmino or Mane are significantly better players now than they were at Hoffenheim and Southampton (where they were excellent but never accused of being world-class). If United miraculously won the league, not only would the team be taken more seriously than before, but a lot of the players would be more highly rated. Until then the narrative is that they are inferior individually.

In fairness Ole absolutely needs some credit for getting a dross United side to level on points with us. I fully expect United to go clear at the top too and I think we drop to third.
Actually wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing as hopefully a wake up call for us. We are still the best team in the league just in woeful form at the moment. First time in about 3 years.

This article is a reminder that as good as Klopp is and he is very good, he is still working with the best players in the league if not the world so him winning trophies should not be a surprise or miracle story.
As much as we have spent money and we have spent a shet load on the defense but Pep hasnt bought a single world class player in his time at City.
Klopp has bought 3 and developed another 3. Fabinho is potentially world-class though.

Pep has overseen spending of over £300m on his defence Part of the managers job is recruitment, and in this respect he has failed if he has to by 2 x £50m players in every defensive position.

Bernardo Silva is like Kante, another reputation player still seen as world class even though he hasn’t been at that level for a couple years now

Aubameyang's goal record in the last 5-6 years suggests he is to me. Been rubbish for a few months but that shouldn't make him no longer world class.
Aguero is probably on the decline now but hasn't had much of a run of games. It's too soon to say he's no longer world class after the previous 9 seasons at City in which he's be quality.
