Surely only a player who guarantees Champions League trophies every season is worth that much? And no player in the history of football has ever been good enough to guarantee a Champions League winners medal

£2.3m a week!
No sportsperson is ever worth that, no matter what they can do.

...and we all know nothing is guaranteed in football.

You're worth whatever someone is willing to pay...

Messing didn't force barca into said contract (assuming this is accurate). They could have sold him and made a sh!tton of money but decided it was in their best interest to give him this contract... So he was worth it.

Lets not forget Real and Barca negotiate their own tv rights... They probably made billions in that period driven mostly by the desire to watch Messi!!!!

Is it the actual contract itself that’s been leaked, or alleged details of it? And who by? Footballleaks, one of the Madrid papers or a reputed news source?

Even half of that money would be a ridiculous amount, but presumably it’s what it took to keep the Qataris and Emiratis at bay.

this is the part of football i try to ignore. it's almost criminal to pay someone that much.
i also question the ffp here.

You'd have to assess that in terms of how large those revenues would be without him.

Barça would still be a huge club in their own right and would have still raked in grillions in endorsements and media revenue.

Also, even though their investment policy in the past half a dozen seasons or so has been horrendous, all that extra cash on Messi could have funded other purchases that might have worked out better. It's not his fault, obviously, that the club spunked stupid amounts on players that don't fit the style, but it's still worth remembering that the failure of many new players to adapt has been widely linked to Messi's all-absorbing presence.

The problem with a member-owned club is that the people making the decisions have to do so bearing the members' sentiment in mind. Letting Messi go rather than caving in to his wage demands would have undoubtedly brought about the removal of the board. They were a completely incompetent bunch, but at least on this issue I can see why Messi was able to demand a king's ransom.

You have to question his self awareness here. He is massively contributing to bankrupting the club he supposedly loves.

Yes no one has forced Barcelona to pay him that much.

I agree there, VC, but he's certainly not unique in that kind of short-sightedness or contradictory behaviour. Players and their agents will almost always push for the biggest possible wedge they can get, especially if there's no one around to bring them to their senses.

As above though, even though Messi himself is partly to blame, the club's actual system of governance is a big factor. It would have taken a very big man to have set him an ultimatum or ushered him out of the club - at the very least one willing to sacrifice his own reputation, position and standing in the history of the club.

And if there's anything Bartoméu was consistent in throughout his tenure, it's that he acted more like a clueless, knee-jerk child than as some kind of elder statesman.

Ronaldo has come pretty close
6 finals in 12 years and 5 winners medals.

Barca have officially responded to the leak and haven't denied the figures quoted. Apparently there are only 6 people at Barca that had access to the details of the contract.

Circa £2.4m a week wages is madness. He's probably on £3m a week with add ons.

Honestly, nothing about the Bartomeu tenure surprises me any more.

Mind you, the contract we handed Bale was just as ludicrous.

*Maybe "almost as", but in terms of each player's worth, it's pretty proportional tbh.

They are worth what their employer is willing to pay, just like any job.
