My work colleague is a forest fan and says he’s the exact type of player they’ve needed this season, someone that looks to be able to spread the play quickly from deep and also get about the midfield. He was more than happy with his performance, I imagine he’ll be a starter for them for the rest of the season unless he’s injured.
To be fair he was excellent in The Rockford Files

If he’s to be compared with Carrick - which given his passing, calm on the ball, and sometimes languid style is understandable - it’d be more the player Carrick was in his early years at West Ham, when he got up and down a bit more and demonstrated he could contribute at the business end.
Jimmy has got a strong technical toolbox for a lad of his age, he reads the game very well, and he has a fantastic temperament: he’s often the hardest-working player on the pitch.
Has good close control, can really pass, can tackle, has excellent positioning for his age, and a fierce strike.
If I were to compare his game (not his talent or performances yet, obviously) to another United midfielder of the past, it’d actually be Robbo.
Definitely think he’ll make it in the PL. Whether it’s at United time will tell I guess.

State on that backing track
Needless to say I am a big fan of the lad and what I think/hope he becomes. He has all the basic attributes you would want for the deeplying cm position.
Would he be competition, or an upgrade on McT then as one of the 2 midfielders, or does he have it in him to be a sole DM more like Matic with legs, allowing us to play 2 more attacking midfielders ahead of him? (Bruno/Pogba/Beeky)?

He has a similar game to McT in many respects.
He has the bite and the willingness to make his presence felt by the opposition, he uses his body quite well, and he likes to spray passes around. Where McT is a little more urgent and scrappy, there’s a bit more grace about Jimmy’s game.
His mid-range passing is better than McT’s, which might potentially make him a better partner for Pogba than Fred or McT, but I think he’d do well alongside either of the latter.

There are very few players in world football capable of playing that role, which is why teams don’t do it. Even Pep’s adjusted his midfield shape due to Fernandinho’s legs going.
Garner looks a promising all round midfielder. Will probably be a few years yet before he’s knocking on the door of the United first team.
Glad the club decided to send him elsewhere, would have been wasted at Watford for the remainder of the season.
Didn’t it work out at Watford?

He started plenty for them up until their manager change, then quite soon after the new manager came in it looks like United and Watford agreed it were best he moved elsewhere. So a bit strange.
