Last night was a bit of a freak, but it's clear we have issues at the back. Hugo, Hoijbjerg and Sanchez were all awful. That's rare for 2/3 of them so hopefully a bit of a one off.
If we play like we did in the first 35 mins (with Kane) we could have a good season. But I'm afraid we'll revert to type and defend. Fair enough against city, but we should be looking to open the game up against teams we are better than.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Come on, this team has had too many "freak" results go against them, to suggest it is a one off. This stuff happens on a regular basis. Why do you think the rest of football calls us spursy ?
Oh and I can tell you now, the weekend game against City will be another, what you call a "freak" result. We will be looking at 6 or 7, trust me.

I agree it's quite freakish, just like the West Ham result was. Don't get me wrong the defence is a laughing stock but this is a bit of an odd season that can bring out the worst in you with no fans around.
I'd rather we continued with the same approach, even if it means conceding a lot of goals. We conceded a lot of goals up to the West Ham game but at least we were attacking and scoring a lot of goals ourselves.
We play like a bunch of dopes all over the pitch not just at the back. It's not just the errors it's also the lack of focus and sharpness when an error is made. They are all switched off and within in a few passes the opposition has a good chance. It just so happens on this occasion Everton capitalised on all those opportunities.
Jose needs to decide, does he want to lose 0-1 or 4-5 each game.
Decisions decisions...

Everton are a good side and our best side will involve Kane starting and Reggy back when he's fit so the one way of playing we would concede a lot of goals but I think we'd win the majority.
The other way we were playing wasn't working. Torturous football with hardly any positive results no matter what the opposition.
It's a no brainer.

yesterday will probably have us back playing low block
tbh i cant even blame jose as much as i want to / thought i could... if he lets the handbrake go we concede goals for fun. whole defence needs changing
Entertaining watch yesterday.
Thing is, it's not a choice of attack or defend, as we've been in poor form trying to defend, so not like that's the answer either.
Hugo has had a good season, but let them back into the game. Rare mistake from PEH and a freak penalty.
NDombele was poor last night, but having him, Lamela and Son starting gives us players wanting to drive forward whenever possible. Add Reggie and Kane to that mix (plus Aurier) and we'd all happily watch the roller-coaster for the rest of the season.
Would happily take a 5-3 loss against city than a 3- 0 loss

Sanchez, Doherty and Davies are cack.
PEH has an uncharacteristically bad game, having been the best player against West Brom.
Winks is useless. Sissoko is an utter donkey. Dele looked awful when he came on, hardly touched the ball. Everton were poor at defending set pieces, and facked up for the Lamela goal - just because we scored 4 I wouldn’t say I was blown away by our attacking performance.
Doesn’t matter if it’s 1-0 or 4-4, our inability to hold onto what we’ve got is staggering. We went from 1-0 up to 3-1 down in a ten minute spell - there’s no resilience, when things start going wrong we fall apart mentally.
We looked very leggy in ET, Son and PEH played 2 intense hours so we basically achieved nothing last night other than throwing away a lead, going out of the cup and knackering key players before the City game.
I didn’t understand the no striker policy but I was glad to see Sissoko on the bench again. I’m not gonna dig Jose out as that’s getting boring, but I do wonder about his decisions and use of the squad. Kind of got out of jail courtesy of a defender blogging a couple from corners. What I will say is the defense looks no better now than from when he arrived, and neither does the mentality. Zero points coming up this weekend, so we’ll be further down the table. In 16 months we have made no progress whatsoever under him, it’s been a waste of time.

Supporting Tottenham Hotspur is a fa ckkking curse. I don’t want to do it anymore. Such a waste of live.
Joke of a football club now.

Waste of life.
Last nights game was a freak result. We were the much better team, with Olsen keeping them in the game. Hugo had one of the worst games i have ever seen him have, more or less every meaningful shot was a goal.
As for our defence, we have the second best in the league so the stats say. People have got to remember that the art of defending is dead and VAR is keeping it 6 foot under. Looking at world football, i don't see many good defensive centre backs anymore, and especially ones that will want to play for us. We are at best, an entry level "big club".
Before you start throwing names of centre backs from other prem clubs that would do a better job than ours, remember that the grass is not always greener. Some players will only be good in the set up they are currently in.
I believe our defence just need to be coached better, drilled over and over on the basics of defending and holding the line and shape, until it becomes instinct.
