I dont recall many complaining about Lukaku being sold last season when Rashford and Martial were doing really well, Lukaku wouldn’t have been picked over either then.

Martial is a weird one.
Been at the club what about 6 years?
What kind of career is he carving out for himself trying playing the squad player role. Wonder if anyone really expects him to step up eventually, I can’t see him being moved on anytime soon.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
He was our best player and top scorer last season.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
What’s happened then?
A few were complaining, to be fair. Especially when we were dropping points in against the smaller teams, where Lukaku gets all his goals.
Complaining about Lukaku leaving after failing to score against a big team seems weird, though.
But they weren’t really complaining when Rashford and Martial started doing well and it would have been very unlikely that Ole would have picked Lukaku over either of them then too so there was no reason to keep him. Especially considering the fee we got from Inter.
“We have no goals in the team other than Bruno.”
Take penalties out of the equation and he’s scored 18% of our goals in the league. And Rashford has scored more than Bruno has.
So that’s a ridiculous statement if there ever was one.
But that was when people were complaining. It wasn’t many, but there were plenty of times when people complained about us dropping points last season as Martial and Rashford weren’t putting away smaller teams - Lukaku has always been a more reliable striker where these games are concerned. They made up for it in the bigger games last season, though. Something Lukaku has always struggled with, even now at Inter he disappears against better sides. He’s one of the best flat track bullies in the world.
The Lukaku-United thing where fan perception is concerned kind of reminds me of Salah-Chelsea. No matter how much evidence now suggests we were idiots for selling him, the funny thing is very few Chelsea fans I know thought it was a mistake even in hindsight (me included) - De Bryune yes, Jose facked up & everyone knew it. Salah no.
From the outside I do think it was an error, but I do see United fans POV when they've debated it with me in the past. One of those ones where you just have to be happy for the player I guess.

There were still games when not having a proper no.9 showed. We still got top 4, so didn't do too much harm. Maybe could have done better in the cups if we had another option up top.
Wasn't there loads of stuff about Lukaku being pretty bad in the dressing room at United? It seems out of character for someone who has got rave reviews as a character at other clubs but I think that whole situation was just toxic for one reason or another and united cashing in made complete sense, it wasn't even like they had to sell him on the cheap.
Christopher, yeah a lot of that was reported. Lukaku’s attitude was terrible towards the end of his time at United. It was one of those situations where it suited both parties to part ways.
The issue has always been the lack of replacement. Because we left ourselves short of a striker. Then we bring one in this summer and our first choice striker goes to shiiiiit.
He's a strange one, Martial. He didn't react well to Ibrahimovic coming in, and he hasn't reacted well to Cavani coming in, but given no competition for his place he shines. He's going to have to work out that life's not like that.
He wasn’t competing with Ibra, though. He was competing with Rashford for a spot on left. I don’t think it’s a competition issue anyway. He’s the first choice striker, but he’s just played shiiiiiit.
Sacking lukaku and Smalling were acts of wilful self sabotage.
No two ways about it.
Unbelievable decisions for two-fold reasons. They were by far the best available in their positions from the squad, and weren't replaced with equal or better from elsewhere.
And there was far worse kicking about the squad that could easily have gone (some are still there).
Huge backward steps.
An outfield 10 that could be selected from:
AWB
Smalling
Maguire
Shaw
Matic/Fred/Pogba/Fernandes/DvdB/Mata (perm any 4 from 6)
Cavani
Lukaku
Would be genuine title contenders.
Without those two missing components ...... pfffft
I seem to remember both Rashford and Martial playing quite well at one stage when they were both competing for the left side when Ibra was here.
That was in 17/18 when Lukaku was playing. Then we signed Sanchez in January.

Tbf to Wahl (horrible thing to have to say)
Ornstein reported City's interest in Lukaku recently
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Lukaku is the complete opposite of what Pep wants in a striker.
That’s just utter nonsense.
Lukaku wasn’t and isn’t good enough.
Since the start of last season Marcus Rashford is 2 goals off Lukaku’s total tally for United.
Bruno Fernandes is 8 off cos total tally.
He’s a good goal scorer doing well in a poor league but he’s not good enough for a top team.
Lukaku? Does not rate in the top 50 or probably 100 Man United players. He was nothing more than average at that level. He probably wouldn't even rate in the top 500 premier league players.

Lukaku will never win you a PL title with as teams as good as City n Liverpool (pre injuries) around.
The problem wasn't selling him. The problem was believing Martial is the guy to replace him. He isn't either and probably isn't even as good as Lukaku for me.
We badly need a top striker. And I'm sorry but we shouldn't be renewing Cavani's contract. He's 34 and misses more games than he plays. Go sign a world class striker.

If a top striker is available then I agree we should buy him but it’s not the top priority for me and with the prices these days, it’s not likely to be able to get what we also need.
For me in order of priority but all three very important:

He missed a few games quarantining and three due to suspension. Those aren’t anything to do with his physical condition.
He’s been out injured twice. The first was a knock. It’s only this last injury which has had anything to do with his musculature.
Given that COVID has absolutely battered United financially - harder than anyone else - I don’t expect that the Glazers will be authorising a splurge this summer. And given that we have bigger issues than CF, we won’t be forking out for a top striker given that it’s a seller’s market for the position at present.
Renew Cavani, have him work with and help develop the youngsters
If we had a good right winger our strikers might get more chances to score.

Sancho would probably beat a defender on the right and put a cross in while Martial and Rashford are still hanging out on the left wing.
