I take your point but think its a poor example, I regularly hear 'proud Englishman' particularly in sport, but, maybe less so outside it.
I agree about the far right hijacking the symbolism and it is a shame, dont think its just the media though, as a proud Scotsman that been here for years, English people dont seem to really want to claim it back, maybe just my impression but, outside international tourneys, they don't honestly seem bothered.
