They’ll need peak 2012 fluke levels to win it.
Good thing Chelsea have a positive manager and not a negative nancy like Simeone or Mourinho

Lampard will be back in the championship where he belongs for his next job, I would think

I don't think they would tbf. They've got better players and a better manager than they had then. The only issue is if they go behind in a tie, as goal scoring hadn't exactly come easily under Tuchel thus far
Definitely don't have better players. Even though they were aging gimme Cech/Terry/Cole/Lampard/Drogba, etc... over any of their counterparts in the team today. Even goes for the flops, gimme Torres over Werner all day
Tuchel will be the key if anything happens. Meticulous managers like him, with a bit of luck, can do great things in cup competitions.
Even ignoring the age of those players, they also had the likes of Bosingwa, Malouda, Bertrand and Kalou playing in that team. Which is why they finished 5th or 6th that year
Tbf I think Di Matteo proved that season's finish was everything to do with AVB's mismanagement. If Ancelotti's still in charge there's minimal chance we're finishing lower than 4th that year.
You could argue the squad as a collective is stronger I suppose, but the first team spine isn't comparable. From today's team Mount (over Mata) is the only one you can really make a case for. Kante over Ramires would be the other if Ramires wasn't utilized more as a RW during the tail end of that season.
Actually Jorginho over Mikel is another
Maybe not in the context of the CL run itself, cos Mikel was fantastic the deeper we went into the competition, but Jorginho is a better deep lying playmaker in general.

Yeah bit strange.
2012 'CL team' (off the top of my head):
Cech
Ivanovic Luiz/Cahill Terry Cole
Mikel Lampard
Ramires Meireles Mata
Drogba
(obviously a bunch of these missed the final, but I'm talking about the run as a whole, not just the final)
With Torres, Kalou, Malouda, Essien, Sturridge as the main bench players
That team had more experience and the players had played together for a long time. More big game players as well and more leaders. I would definitely say the 2012 team was better than the current team. I mean Drogba alone would be much more likely to score a clutch goal in an important moment than our entire current team put together.
Yep. Splitting hairs talking about two out of form players from our prospective, but Torres was a better striker, had more to his game - could dribble, had a decent header, was stronger (physically), though wasn't his strong suit still technically better, etc... big thing Werner has on the version we got is lightening pace.
Obviously if Werner discovers form at some point he'll ultimately be the better signing, but at this moment if given a choice for the rest of this season - yeah I'd take 11-12 Torres over him.
It was that team Wahl except Miereles could be Meireles for Kalou.
The teams are probably about equal. Big names in that 2012 CL squad but in reality Cole, Lampard, Drogba had all started to decline already. Terry and Cech still on their game
He did have more to his game but I don’t think that translates to his overall performance being better. Torres’ scoring record and goal contributions was awful throughout his Chelsea career,
