Alex Higgins was great, he is well and truly missed.
I just see someone who threw his talent away, he was an attention seeking alcoholic nasty piece of work, I make no wonder why Barry Hearn wouldn't let him into the Match room mob in the mid 80's, that really got to Higgins, but he was too daft, or pished to see why he wasn't taken in.. He wouldn't survive against the modern day player, & Slowby would torture him...
Yep I have to agree with that to be honest, he certainly had far too many problems unfortunately. I never liked his cue action either, fair enough it did generally work for him but it did look a very odd cue action lol
Watch the snooker gods Steve Davis programme, Barry Hearn explains just why he didn't take Higgins into the fold
British Open tournament is returning it will be from 16th August till 22nd August.
Let's have a quiz Who was the last winner of the British Open? bonus points for also getting the opponent.
It was Higgins 😅, ( John) 2004 I've just seen it
I agree that Alex Higgins was self destructive, but remember if there were no Alex, there may have been no Jimmy White, no Ronnie O Sullivan, no Judd Trump.
Not only because of his style of play, but also because without Alex, there may have been no boom period in snooker which means youngsters may not have even taken up snooker in the first place.
I think Alex would’ve struggled against many modern players but one thing he had was bottle. To beat Davis in 83 after being 7-0 down is something I don’t think someone like Shaun Murphy (for example) would do.
But yes it was pretty common for players like Alex to win a lot less than players like Davis in most sports.
That’s why Ronnie’s record is so impressive IMO, he has been erratic too just like Alex, but has ended up with a record like Hendry.
He did have bottle, & that 69 break in the 82 semi was excellent, Ronnie is the best player I've seen, but if he had Hendry's will to win he's have 30 triple crowns & 10 World titles...

Watch the snooker gods Steve Davis programme, Barry Hearn explains just why he didn't take Higgins into the fold
=======================================
I finally watched this last night.
Now whilst it was a very good watch, how many times have we watched the same?
When Snooker Ruled the World
The Alex Higgins Documentary
The Rack Pack
40 Year Crucible Anniversary
Now this
4 different programs that pretty much have mentioned exactly the same stories about:
How Pot Black was very popular on TV
Alex Higgins 82 win and subsequent self destruction
Steve Davis relationship with Barry Hearn and Spitting Image's "Interesting" Davis, dominating the 80s
The 1985 final
Tony Knowles being a ladies man
Cliff Thorburn being the housewife's choice with the Magnum mustache doing the first Crucible 147
Snooker Loopy and the Matchroom guys
What normally happens next is Jimmy White is mentioned about 6 Final losses especially 1992 and 1994
Hendry domination of the 90s will be mentioned next
Don't get me wrong, I love watching old footage about the above. But I just feel it gets a bit repetitive.
To be fair they very very rarely show like an hour footage of Stephen Hendry in the 90's they only focus on the 80's it would be nice to have a long programme focusing on him.
Good analysis Just true.. Seen it all a million times, Arsenal, I hated Hendry in the 90's but his style of play was Bentley to Jimmy's Vauxhall 😂...
I agree that we should definitely have more footage of Hendry in the 90s
Also, would be great to have more footage about the younger days of Ronnie, Williams, Higgins. I usually see very little of the late 90s and early 2000s which I feel was actually snooker's golden period in terms of all round quality.
Ronnie, Higgins & Williams were all triple crown winners in the 1990's, Higgins was world champ in 1998, let's see more of them
Anyone had a chance to play snooker yet?
I, sadly haven't played for years, none of my mates love their snooker like me, I could player a world final every day 😂😂
havent played since march 2020
my last night out before covid was playing snooker in riley's
The last time I played was October last year, I'm playing this Sunday, I will probably be very rusty but hoping to at least get a break in double figures lol.
That's potting 4 balls Arsenal 😂😂, I'd probably manage 3 🤣
I'm sure you're good really
I'd love to get back into it
Been chatting with Neal Foulds on twitter about the snooker gods programmes 😂👍
