James has definitely outperformed Trent this season, there’s no about about that. Reckon he’ll be starting in that position come the Euros.
Trent is a good player but he’s been nowhere near as effective this season so far
James doesn't even get in the Chelsea back 4. He plays as a wing back if they change to a 4 then it is Apzi at right back.

I think he has had to play with so many different defenders and midfielders in defence it's obviously going to effect his own level of performance.
Losing hendo/fabinho from midfield also made the defence weaker and his job more difficult. Take 7-8 defenders out of chelskis defence and see if James form doesnt dip. It would definitely.
Trents been outstanding since he broke onto the scene at 18/19. Reece is talented too. But if he can emulate what trents done for the past 3 years or so and then his form and ridiculously high standards inevitably slip at some point thats makes him a poor player and the next talented 20 year old better than him cause hes had a better half a season? Talented as he is reece and i highly rate him but Hes 21 too btw trents done far more already.
And then even with all those obstacles Trent has still been better in the final third than James and also absolutely blows him away as a ball progressor (which Trent does to most fullbacks tbf)

I think both TAA and James are the best 2 English RB's we have, but both for different reasons. TAA has fantastic ability with the ball, whereas James isn't as good in that respect but seems to be better defensively as a full back.
I wouldn't take Southgate's view though as he still has Trippier and Walker in high regard. Granted both have had very good respective seasons, the saying form is temporary, class is permanent should come into play here, as John Stones' error against Poland being supportive evidence of form being temporary.
