liability when ramos isn't next to him holding his hand
nacho and militao getting their chance shown we dont need him
hope we sell him to utd for big ££
----------------------------------------------------------------------
If he's a liability player that you don't need, and presumably on a high salary that he would expect to replicate elsewhere, is it realistic to expect a big transfer fee?
Man Utd often find we fail to get big fees for players we want to move on, because by definition if we don't want them, they aren't playing at the standard of the elite wages they are receiving. Surely the same dynamic applies here: either Varane is a huge asset that Real are reluctant to part with and won't let go without a big fee, or he's a player who has become dispensable and who would free up salary to strengthen other parts of the squad?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
i was actually happy varane wasn't able to play against liverpool
i felt our defence was much more secure with nacho and militao as CBs
varane without ramos next to him telling what to do is a disaster waiting to happen
i think if as seems will happen, madrid try bigtime to get neymar, mbappe or haaland this summer, they will be looking to offload players quick, and some of them for less ££ than you'd think
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Any bargains we should look out for? Any chance Isco will be up for grabs? Casemiro as a short term Matic upgrade?
I don't actually rate Pogba that highly, if he goes.
More than ever though Real need to raise funds. They are reportedly likely to take a 300m euro hit from Covid and lets not forget their 900m euro debt

Real in the past have been happy to sell quality players for a reasonable price that can still do a job to get their shiny new toy. Although the last time we did that with Real we spent £75m on di María. Varane isn’t South American so we don’t have to worry about that at least.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
At United we've often brought in 'past their best' players for short-term injection of experience: Blanc, Larsson, Owen, Schweinsteiger, Ibrahimovic, Cavani. Generally on a free or very modest fees. Di Maria was an elite player obviously not past his peak, and Real did well to extract such a fee for him (partly because we were more desperate than his other suitors). I'm interested where Varane would fit on this 'Schweinsteiger to Di Maria' continuum.
I just admit I thought Varane was older than 27 (28 this month), thought he was 29/30 tbh.
Varane is nearly 28 years of age. Usually CBs reach their peak level of performance around then. He would be more of a Di Maria signing.
I dont really keep up to date with Real so couldn’t really say but I’d imagine he’s closer to di María? Even with a drop in performance he’s still only 27 with no real injury problems and rated as one of the finest defenders on the planet. The ones you’ve listed have either been over 30, no longer needed, have injury problems or a combination of the 3.
Could be a top signing but I think this is bs.
He’s maybe overrated but still better than anything we have as I used to winning.

Dont need him, Phil Jones is getting back to fitness.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Didn’t SAF choose to sign Jones over Varane or did Varane just choose Real?
This would be the best signing we could make at cb this summer.

Do you rate him even higher than Maguire, Dazza?
Any thoughts on fee, given the Covid economy and Real's circumstances?

Yeah. Varane has plenty of experience cleaning up Ramos’ clownish defending, so he’ll fit right in.
I have no idea how this market is going to look this summer. Madrid tend to get good fees for their players, but other than Bale, Perez doesn’t tend to price players out of their preferred moves when they want to leave.
He’ll probably end up going to Chelsea anyway after we fack about with derisory bids.
If we get a CB this summer reckon it will be someone like Joachim Anderson from Lyon/Fulham or Ben White from Brighton.

Isco and Odriozola will be leaving in the summer i think
Casemiro, don't think so
On paper he is pretty much the ideal partner for Maguire. Haven't watched La Liga for a few years though so can't comment on recent form.
I think given Liverpool's struggles this year though, a new CB is probably a more important signing than I realised. As much as some don't rate him, Maguire has been so freakishly dependable fitness-wise that it's masked the fact we are one injury to him away from a crisis back there.
Keep seeing Pau Torres the Villareal defender linked to us on the gossip pages etc. Never heard of him or seen him play.
We’ll probably end up with Boateng.

We really should have made more of the opportunity back when they were selling players of the quality of Sneijder, Robben and VDV for bargain basement fees. (Actually, we it basically a Dutch thing? Did the president's wife sleep with some merchant seaman from Rotterdam?)
Ramos probably just told Varane to use our name to get more money like he did.
What makes the Sneijder and Robben sales so frustrating was that is was the same window we sold them Ronaldo and ended up with Owen, Obertan and Valencia.

No value in the market, I tell ye
I remember I was desperate to use half of the Ronaldo money to sign Ribery.
Robben
We definitely need a cb anyway. What calibre of cb depends on the market. The Jones twins will probably move on, and they could have their squad roles replaced quite easily.
The question is whether we’ve got the money to go for a bonafide, top level cb, bearing in mind that we need a striker, right winger and probably a centre mid if Pogba leaves.
Imagine people complaining about varane when we're sitting on maguire and lindelof he's literally on another planet compared to the dross we have at cb
