All the fat feckers have had over a year to cut out the carbs, lose some weight and pack in smoking.

There won't be anymore lockdowns, and rightly so.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

So you should also say let the bodies pile high as well then. Especially as 130,00 have already died from Covid. Not a very sensitive remark. Imagine Corbyn had said that.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

I would be very worried if Corbyn had anything to say in the matter. We would be part of the EU and in danger of not enough vaccines.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Despite the vaccines, the only thing to remember is Britain has the worse death toll in Europe.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
So lockdowns haven’t worked then? Going against the point of this article

Lockdowns have done more harm than good. What we needed was to enable as many of the under 30's as possible to catch the virus, as they are at virtually no risk from it.

Well its not quite that straight forward, there are a number of ways of looking at it. As one of the largest populations UK will naturally have a higher number all other things being equal. When you look at deaths per million population there are plenty of European countries which has suffered worse than the UK.

Another stat is that although we have had less positive tests than say France, about 1m less, we have had more deaths (about 25k more). This while we have also tested almost twice as many people than France (so really this should reveal more positive tests, but still way below french levels). Therefore our catching rate has been lower but our death rate higher. This says quite a bit about the health of the nation as opposed to how the lock down and other measures have controlled the virus - or there may be some anomalies in how other countries measure their deaths, certainly the French death rate is a very low % of their overall positive cases
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Or you could say we should have very few deaths because we are an Island. You won't find any island in the entire world that comes anywhere near the death toll of the UK.

Well lockdown has worked very well, and the death toll could have been halved, if our idiotic PM had locked down earlier.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Being an island has little to do with it because once it is here, it's here. Indeed it mutated in this country and the highly contagious Kent variant was largely responsible for the size of the winter spike and has subsequently ripped through the mainland with some of the other variants. Hence why France and Germany and others are having 10-15 times the amount of deaths than us right now. We got it first and got over it. Meanwhile France still has curfews in place.

Beyond our decision making at the start which inevitably cost extra lives, the second wave was far more deadly. The peak daily deaths was about 80% higher. What contributed to this is not a simple answer but no doubt the Christmas easing did, but mainly the Kent variation which spread so quickly.

Its interesting to note the criticism levelled at the Government at the end of November when the Tiers were put in place after lockdown 2. So many, including Sir Kier, were highly critical of the severity of the Tiers, saying they had little justification, and pushing for relaxation. What followed was a devastating 2nd peak. So it just goes to show that predicting this pandemic and making the right decisions is extremely difficult in the moment, but being highly critical after the event is very easy. Positions taken and criticism made back then easily forgotten with new criticisms levelled now with 20:20 hindsight.

You are wrong, much of the peak deaths came in Jan and February, nothing to do with the lockdown that came into effect at the end of Oct.

Not having that mate Johnson has made some catastrophic decisions re the Pandemic. He needs to own them. No passing the buck on this one. Locking down late last March was bad enough, he never learnt his lesson, thus there were thousands of needless deaths, and he was finally forced to lock down again, after telling everybody they could have a normal Xmas back in the Autumn, when the Scientists said it would be anything but.

He aint getting away with this one.

Being an Island has a lot to do with levels of Covid, it cannot actually swim as far as I know, so locking down borders very quickly and stopping incomings should have been the first port of call.

Japan is an island country of similar size to Britain. close to where the epidemic started, with a population of 120 million, largely greater than the UK, yet has a death toll of under 10,000. You work that one out. They knew exactly how to handle it. They shut the borders from the off. As did New Zeland, as did Australia. UK meanwhile is still letting passengers fly in from India.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Wrong.

We're 13th and all the ones above us are European.

No one is happy about this but there is so much misinformation out there, as you've just demonstrated, and the understanding of death rates goes beyond decisions made by the Government.

France has a mortality rate 1.9% of cases while UK nearly 3%.

We've had 1m less cases and 25k more deaths.

We've had as many cases as Turkey and 3.5 times as many deaths.

Despite being under massive pressure the NHS has coped well overall, people havent been dying on mass in their homes or in corridors.

Outside of the clear errors that have been made especially at the beginning of all this, its an interesting debate to have as to why our death rate per case has been higher than most. It certainly isnt political.

Unsurprisingly loads of people are defending the comments

Every step in terms of limiting virus spread has been spectacularly poor from his government. Early, decisive lockdowns do work and in the long run they lead to far better outcomes economically and health wise.

On the other hand letting things run riot leads to death, long term illness and in the case of Covid new strains that are more devastating

Considering he literally went around in front of news cameras bragging about shaking hands with Covid patients in hospital and not wearing a mask, pushing for herd immunity, apparently saying let the bodies pile up (his actions said as much regardless) then I wouldn't say he's being scapegoated at all.

It would be his actions catching up with him but as mentioned I don't think it'll come to anything, a large chunk of the British public are too subservient to Johnson and his party

...

Scapegoat isn’t the right word, you’re right, as he clearly is to blame for a good portion of the problems.

Which makes it all the more easier for the tories to force him out and pretend they’ve rid themselves of the problem.

Problem is though as you say, he is actually incredibly popular among people who refuse to admit they were wrong when they voted for him.
