Wolves v Man U match preview

posted on 20/5/21

In the reverse fixture in December, Man U ran out 1-0 winners thanks to a 90th minute goal from Marcus Rashford.
--------------------
I was told that he has been dire all season, it's not possible that he won us 3 points and scored a goal... Please check your facts

Scoring last minute winners is why he'll never be a top, top player. Leaves it too late.

I don’t go by the narrative that he’s been awful all season but he scored that goal through a flukey deflection when he should have passed to Cavani who was in a better position. If it hasn’t gone in he’d have been slated.

He only gets abuse from the minority of idiots but he’s a very frustrating players at times.

I'd be surprised if he scored a goal coming in from the right. He is Trashford there.

Good to hear Raul Jimenez will be able to play next season too

He should never ever play on the right. Yes he can put in the odd good cross from there but mainly looks lost.

Very frustrating player, but has a knack of getting a decent amount of goals & assists when playing crap. 11 goals & 9 assists isn't a terrible return. (not great either though!)

Exactly. He’s had decent numbers this season but he’s had too many games where he’s been downright poor.

I think he’s been overplayed and if we get Sancho as well as Greenwood being a year older and hopefully Martial regaining form then we won’t have to rely on him so much.

It's 21 and 16 over the entire season.

Last season was widely considered as a breakthrough for Rashford, as he started to emerge as a senior player became more consistent in his output, and registered more than 20 goals in a season for the first time. So it's interesting that he's attracting much more ambivalent reviews this season, given that he's on 21 goals (compared with 22 last year) while only scoring one penalty (compared with 6 last year) and contributing more assists.

I think the issue is partly expectations: we've seen him turn in some unplayable performances and it's frustrating to see him dip below that level. It does look as though there's an issue with fitness - quite often he looks as though he's playing within himself, or limiting himself to bursts at key moments. I think there's also a need for better split second decision making.

I wish we had the problem that one of our forwards had only scored 21 goals and got 16 assists.

It's the human condition to always be dissatisfied, isn't it? The closer you get to the top, the higher the expectations. Rashford has his most productive season? - Yes, but he should be scoring more than that, and should *look* more dangerous while scoring them.

And all whilst not looking fit for the whole of the season. What he really needs is an extended rest, but he won't get that with the Euros.

Elvis, he could definitely do with a tactical withdrawal from the Euros. Unfortunately from our perspective, he strikes me as someone who will gladly play through pain to take part in a major tournament for England.

Sounds like you have the same problem as us with 'real fans' and 'internet fans' split down the middle. I bet the real fans all go to games and never have a wrong opinion on anything right? It's the same here, we have one 'real fan' and he puts us right every few days.

Most of us were critical of this season but turns out it's been 'another great season' so we are buzzing right now and really disappointed this will be the last game of it.

I don't really have any issue with whether people are match going or not. Each to their own. I don't go very often myself these days. I just find it ridiculous that we have some fans that seem to hate Rashford. He's a good kid, a role model, and a very good player. He's toiled all season, obviously still suffering from his serious back injury and also and ankle injury, giving everything that he has. He hasn't by any means had a great season, but he has still returned decent figures. When you look at his goal contributions per minute, he is only a little behind Rooney and Ronaldo during their time at United, so he is in decent company and still has to reach his peak. And yet some of our fans slate him. I just don't understand the logic. It is a total lack of respect to the player and also a lack of understanding of what the club is about.

I can understand the frustration. He's regularly offside, often runs down blind alleys, his decision making can be poor etc. But at the end of the day, him and Bruno (who is no stranger to poor decision making and generally poor performances at times himself) are by far and away our most productive players. So any criticism must be levelled with the inclusion of that caveat and an acknowledgement of their importance to the team, in order to be balanced and not just a subjective rant

How old is he now? Like Tam joked above, I wish we had a poor player giving half the return Rashford gives. Our top scorer this season has five goals I think
