so united cup in 2008 was a fluke? because it's a result of one slip in a rainy night. It's not luck, it's never a fluke if you battle all these heavy wight teams to reach the final and win it
----------------------------------------------------------------------
If Terry scores they lose. Simple as that. The keeper's gone the wrong way so contributes nothing to it and the luck of a very fine margin saves them, but I'm not the one preaching about luck, the self-righteous Man U fans are. I know we had a lot of luck in 2012 but if anyone was OWED a lot of luck - we were, after the refereeing disgrace of the Barca semi in 2009 and the various near misses over the years that we had with that team. We had to play in THEIR stadium for a final, how loaded for one team is that, playing a Cup Final at your opponents ground. The fixture should have been moved by UEFA in my opinion.

To be fair you probably were owed a decent bit of luck, not disputing that. But you got it in spades.

Out of curiosity what do you feel was really lucky for us about 2012?

We got our captain and Cb sent off vs Barca
Our other CB went off injured and we had to play with Bosingwa at CB
Ramires scored the best finish under pressure you’ll ever see

Even vs Bayern a mis hit header hit the ground and bounced up and went in, and then we got a penalty given against us for a dive

Even in the group stage it only went to the final game because in one of the games by a stroke of bad luck a ball hit Kalou’s arm so the team got a penalty against us

Whereas in '99 apparently you got "Some luck"

As the Queen would say "Some recollections may vary". Well my recollection of your final at the Nou Camp was that if that was a boxing match the ref would have stopped it at half time and I remember the Bayern player coming off with 20-30 minutes to go and he was celebrating with his family in the stands. You played for about 5-10 minutes tops IMO and scored the vital goals.

As you would say "You got it in spades".

Bosingwa was brilliant that night. He had to be, as it was wave after wave attacking you. You Pretty much managed one attack the whole first half if I remember correctly. The ball went anywhere but in, a bit like against us in 99, but we atleast made it out of our half a bit more than you did.,I know it’s a sore point to have it laid out like that, but I’m sure if you look back unbiased you’ll see it was a huge amount of luck and some great last ditch defending, along with you taking pretty much your only chance that won you it. Which is fair enough, but the (far)?better team lost, like they did in .99. , but it wasn’t quite as one sided as your great escape. I struggle to think about a result as unwarranted, but in some ways it wasn’t, because the desperate rear guard action was impressive to watch, and when it failed, luck stepped in. Even lampard said he thought it was over when they scored because they had dominated so much.

Being down to the bare bones with Terry suspended both central defenders for us that night played with injuries (hamstrings if memory serves) and were far more outstanding than Bosingwa (apart from his photobombing celebrations) was in your history rewrite. The fact is that as Brummie told you earlier if your current team had a fraction of the refusal-to-lose that was demonstrated by our team that night then you would now have the trophy instead of Villarreal. I notice that you seem to choose to ignore that we had to play at their stadium and all that it involves. If you could play the FA Cup Final at OT against an inferior team then maybe you can actually imagine what it was like.

Anyway we could go on for hours here Barry going around in circles about who had the least lucky win, but I'm bored with this pointless exercise now and I'm sure that you've got some crucial drawings to present to us on JA, while more importantly I've got some celebratory champagne that I now need to quaff, so I'll just wish you goodnight here.

I don’t really get why good keeping or defending is seen as lucky, football isn’t all about offense

I hope you enjoy your champers, you were magnificent last night (aside chillwell diving and rudiger). Did a number on city and the shape that was held by the team throughout was something else, it was near flawless. Enjoy.

09 is what you call bad luck because we could and should of had at least 4-5 penalties, they should of had 9 men and we conceded a late goal from nowhere

I wouldn’t call defending deep with 10 men against Barca and managing to do it all about “luck” you can’t just get through a 90 min match and about 70 mins of it with 10 men purely by luck, it’s too long. Was done through sheer grit determination and hard work, they were limited to long range shots and we didn’t get any lucky ref decisions, we ground it out and countered and scored late on too

Would say the same if it was any team, it wasn’t luck it was hard work, defending is part of football

I don’t remember Cech making world class saves in the final apart from the 6 penalties he faced.

Ah yes 2012 and the last missed Schweinsteiger penalty, I never discovered if Cech got his finger tip to it or it was a direct to post thing. I feel he "saved" it...in that case would have been 'world class plus" not that it really matters. Only the end result does.

Cech says he made contact with every penalty he faced that night. I agree the pen saves were brilliant.
