In fact it was pretty similar to the goals you've scored in the season

Well worked play to the byline and cut back to a late arrival in the box

I cannot remember many if any city shots on target in CL final, so that is a massive part of why Chelsea have won.

If we had someone to teach Werner how to score, it would have been "comfortable".

Hopefully, Kane or another goal machine arrives in the summer sales.

Lol we have beaten you comfortably 3 times in the last few months..

I didn't see much comfort there, 1-0 against our B Team in the cup and a deflected last minute fluke at the Etihad.

Wins, yes. Comfortable, no.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Very comfortable, and hardly our best team in the other games, and when you do meet our best team it was very comfortable and as so many have pointed out an on form striker and the game was done within the first 30mins. We could have played all night and City weren't gonna score - even when we shut up shop and let you have the ball for the last 20 we still looked the most likely to score.

Once again we beat you comfortably 3 times, and with a scoring striker those games are even further apart.

Tuchel, his style and tactical awareness is Pep's kryptonite ... at the moment.

Works both ways with the scoring striker part. I didn’t think you were that comfortable in the last twenty minutes, or the first ten. Likewise we were more comfortable when we changed our press. Too late though.

You looked most threatening when you had runners through the middle

I didnt feel much threat when the crosses came in tbh, our defenders had the measure and were first to pretty much on all of those

The credit I would give to Pep is that we are only capable of carrying out the tactics to counter you because we have Kante

You know we’ve lost the plot when we resort to floating balls into the box like we did yesterday. Not our game that at all

I was expecting to have to fade a few Gundogan late arrival cut backs but i can’t remember him really even attempting to do that

We were really disappointing. But keep knocking on the door and it will come I’m sure of that. Tbh I’ve had a great weekend regardless. First time I’ve watched the game with dad, brother uncle cousin etc since the pandemic. Fecking missed it!

The tactical breakdown of the game is pretty fascinating

Wenger was talking on beIN about how Tuchel had built the defensive tactics from the front back. Mount and Kai were sitting very narrow so as to push Citys attacks to the wings

Also the whole thing on the left side with Chilwell always showing Mahrez the wing with the cut inside covered by Kante. Everything was designed push City to the wide areas

You were obviously worthy finalists and almost certainly the best team in Europe over the season.

Ive had to come back from both the 08 final and that ridiculous semi final vs Barca in 09

No doubt you'll have a CL win in the next 3 years at minimum imo

Thought you were really efficient. And as you say as soon as the balls started floating in that was it really, so easy to defend against because we don’t have the right players to make playing like that count. Fair play. I actually thought you had a shout for the league this time last year with the signings you made, now you’ve got the right manager I think you’ll be up there next season.

I assume that must now be your so-called best team Boris or as you have recently said, we were just lulling you into a false sense of security

Your best team is more elusive than Lord Lucan.

Pretty much. The annoying thing is how to press against them and how Tuchel sets them up has already been shown by other teams, we didn’t even try that though.

To be fair, Tuchel is quite pragmatic. We have had problems when smaller teams press us because we play a far more open style - less structured and have far more possession, especially in the final third.

But I think Tuchel accepts the fact that City will have more possession and sets up to not allow you to harm us. A despite not having as much possession, we do have quite a bit, more than most against you. Just think we are more tactically aware, Pep always plays the same, whoever is on the pitch.

He doesn’t though, he keeps the principles the same but changes how we play, particularly without the ball, every single game. I wish he wouldn’t but ultimately, it’s what you get with him and most of the time he does get it right.

What he decided to do with Mahrez and Sterling, and subsequently our fullbacks, is what caused our main issues on Saturday. I got what he was trying to achieve but to change it up that much after not playing that way much at all recently was a risk that backfired. We only got the benefits of it once or twice and conversely were constantly out of shape once the ball out wide to the opposite side was made.

But that's more or less what he did in the other two games against us, but this time he tried to be more aggressive with possession - hence Gundogan. Chelsea stifled the wingers and full backs - he said in his interview that he knew City would play like that. And the five at the back allowed Rudiger or Azpilicueta to step into the midfield and make a three against De Bruyne. There was just no space for you in front of our goal and you couldn't get down the sides either.

Not quite sure that I agree with you there Melton. We struggle more with teams that play with a low block and park the bus like Arsenal did because our current lack of clinical finishing means that when we are finding space in the box difficult, our profiligate behavior in front of goal means that when we only create a few chances then we are unlikely to take one of them. Coming into this game I was dreading that Pep might have watched the Leicester (Cup Final) and Arsenal games and seen just how impotent we were to those tactics and try to sit deeper and counter us, which I believe he has done only rarely in difficult European away games (I think) with the speed that City can break could have caused us big problems. The high press that City do suits us to be honest and I think that they seem more vulnerable to the long ball like Saturday when Rodri or Fernandinho are not playing. The only time I have noticed us playing long ball this season was against Fulham at home, who were trying to press us high up the pitch.

posted on 31/5/21

You’re talking about us in possession though, I’m not talking about that. We normally keep Sterling and Mahrez wide in the press, we didn’t do that on Saturday and that led to the outball being on to Chilwell. It happened three times before you scored from the exact same move again, which was the really annoying thing watching it.

What we should have done is leave your wide cbs to it and force the ball up the middle. I get why Pep tried what he did, it was obvious early on the potential reward from it wasn’t worth the risk though. It also messed up our attacking transition.
