Was he our number 1 target though?
I mean it's not as if we really tried to blow Villa out of the water, is it.
Mid table realities hitting.
Nowhere reported he was our number 1 target. He was one of our targets, but I think if we were that desperate to have him, I'm sure we'd have made more of an effort.
Whether this proves to be the right decision or not, only time will tell.
Can't begrudge the likes of Martinez and Buendia taking a step up in their careers. I can see them maybe coming to you guys at the latter ends of their careers.
Who said he was our no.1 target? I really wish people wouldn't start rewriting history...
Buendia was a player we had been tracking since last summer, and also had a look at buying in January. The conclusion was that we would make his signing a priority this summer and let Norwich keep him for the remainder of last season. There were also numerous reports in the media about Buendia being the #1 desire of a number of people high up in the structure at Arsenal. He was the first player we made a bid for this summer, before the transfer window even opened. I don't think it's a ridiculous claim to make that he was our main target this summer, alongside some others.
so sad how far we've sunk
I think a more credible theory is Arteta wanted to sign Buendia and have Odegaard again next season on loan. He and Edu must've felt confident that scenario was possible too.
We probably did still want Buendia, but when Zidane left Real it changed Odegaard's availability, and meant the budget we'd allowed for Buendia could no longer stretch as far as we originally allowed.
Think this is more likely than his 'best mate' Martinez selling him Villa over Arsenal etc.
usually teams sell their best player when they're relegated not promoted.
The bottom line is the package Villa offered across the board was simply better, Arsenal couldn't match it. I'm sure Martinez told him Villa are a much more attractive option too, which is also true. Any player with common sense would pick Villa over Arsenal now unless said player is that desperate to play in London.
We are standing still whilst teams around us are strengthening. Everton, West Ham and now Villa. Heck..give Spurs a better manager and they compete for top 4.
Not saying these teams have better players (they do in some positions), but they have decent structures and most importantly, the have A PLAN. Spurs were on the up under Pochettino until Levy decided to go miserly and then bring in a washed up Mourinho. West Ham could potentially build on this season if they hold onto their best players and Moyes seems a good fit. Everton spent decently last summer...a few more tweaks and avoiding a massive drop in form and they will fight for Europe. Villa...I think they will be my second team to watch next season...they have gotten a stellar midfield now and Watkins up top. A great goalie and decent defense. A few more smart buys and they would be a sho in for Europa next season if they hold onto their best players too.
Arsenal...we don't seem to have a plan yet. You'd think that maybe...just maybe we old have identifies targets to fix gaping holes before the season ended and get players in fast. But nope. Still the same manager, owners and lack of planning.
Buendia is not worth £30m more like £20m
i think the additions of Buendia and Bissouma would have been a good window for Arsenal. That and hoping Pepe continues his form into next season. Saka and ESR kicking on from promising seasons and Martineli staying fit, Partey maybe settling down?
Arsenal keep making mistakes though, Leno over Martinez, strange pointless use of money like Willian. Even Aubameyang hasn't justified that new contract has he? Peps adamant Arsenal have the right man in Arteta which might give hope that he can eventually turn a corner with Arsenal.

20m when he was relegated with Norwich the first time in the prem sure, where he was one of the leagues most creative players in a relagation side. Now hes back in the prem after a season where hes scored 15 assisted 16 in 39 apps for them and is only 24.
I feel the price villa paid quite reasonable. More justified than Watkins and that turned out alright.
OP what do you mean? You’re supposed to be acting like you never wanted him in the first place like other Arsenal fans. Get with the program

on Arsenal: “They were working together about Buendia as a possibility but also for Ødegaard. The main priority is always Martin Ødegaard. They are still focused on Ødegaard, to see what happens at Real Madrid with the new manager, Carlo Ancelotti.” #afc
Odegaard is Arsenal’s ‘number 1 target’ then.

Don't let your bias get in the way there...! As for the package, do we even know what each club offered? Who can even say how serious Arsenal were... they've been saying that Odegaard is the preferred player for that position since before the end of the season.
If hes that good then why only 2 clubs interested and not more

Yes, because the quantity of suitors is a great determiner of quality. Wish we’d used that logic when we were the only clubs interested in Bergkamp, Henry and Vieria
