Yup, no idea if Howe would be any good but big organisation fear of personality appoint the guy that got top marks in the coaching badge rather than a guy that can win stuff.
It's been said a million times but as it's a cup competition the best team won't necesserily win although often do. France are still the best team/squad imo and if they manage to perform and get that little bit of luck here and there should win. But you really can't predict based on these 2 rounds of games, although saying that England don't look great and Southgate is clearly a reason for that. They could improve but that will need Southgate changing his ways and allowing the squad to play to it's strengths which I sadly don't see happening.
France, Portugal, Italy, Germany, Belgium have better players than England just about everywhere on the pitch than England.
This isn't Southgate's fault. As much as some would like it to be. He might not be a top technical coach, and might not get a big 6 job in the PL (although Spurs would probably jump at the chance right now)... but if his brief is to win Euro20 with what he has got in his squad, against the above mentioned teams, then its is pretty impossible. Yes England will get through this group. But when we meet decent sides in the knockouts we are going home.
You’re missing the point though. Southgate has made the likelihood of us beating those teams even less as It’s only impossible if you don’t have a well organised and well drilled team.
That’s been the worrying thing in the first two games (and throughout his tenure). The patterns he’s implementing for the set of players at his disposal, both with and without the ball. You can’t just disregard managerial instruction. Italy are a prime example of getting both right over the last couple of years.
And yet there were countries with better players than Portugal, Greece and Denmark when they won the Euros. England shouldn't expect to beat these teams but clearly a better manager who is capable of getting the most out of his squad will do a better job. Southgate isn't an awful coach but he isn't very good either and that has an effect on how good a job England can do.
That’s been the worrying thing in the first two games (and throughout his tenure). The patterns he’s implementing for the set of players at his disposal, both with and without the ball. You can’t just disregard managerial instruction.

England are well organised and drilled. (Whatever drilled means in a football context).
Are you saying that the players don't do what Southgate instructs them?
So he is right and the players are letting us down?
France, Portugal, Italy, Germany, Belgium have better players than England just about everywhere on the pitch than England.
——————————
No they don’t
This squad is criminally underrated.
England were the joint favorites at the start of the tournament. England squad is the most valuable squad by a country mile according to transfer market valuations. These ratings are done by professional football analysts.
You can disagree with them, but is is ridiculous to suggest that there are six teams with better players for every position.

I think he's saying the players are doing exactly what the manager is asking of them and that they can't just go out and play their natural game. A good example would be Reece James getting criticized in player ratings the other day for not getting forward enough. Funnily enough, TAA doesn't get forward enough for England either. It's almost as if they're being told to defend first and foremost by an overly cautious manager and the considerable attacking tools they possess aren't being utilised.
I don't even think it's debatable at this stage. England could and should have a better manager than Gareth Southgate. But he plays the political game very well and is sure and steady. The FA love that. Trophy cabinets are less enamoured

I don't know how anybody can look at that Italy squad and say it's superior to England's. What they do have is a vastly superior manager who has them playing far better as a team than Southgate ever could or would
Southgate is the main problem, he can handle work horses like lingard and Dele Ali, but he is clueless when it comes to talented footballers.
For example, sancho is one the highest rated players in the world. he cannot he a minute of football in-spite having five substitutions.
It doesn’t make any sense. Watch Archie Rhind Tutt’s reaction when asked about it. He is lost for words.
Team is creating feck all in the current set up. So tricky players like grealish and sancho could have atleast win a free kick. But Southgate over think, over complicate and makes a mess of everything, as usual.

England winning these Euros would be less unlikely than Portugal winning the last one. France due to tournament experience and Italy who play the most cohesive football are the only teams whose chances I rate above England at the moment. I'd put England in the same bracket as Germany, Portugal, Spain and Belgium. I think so many years of disappointment have made many England fans overly pessimistic. This is England's best squad England have brought to a tournament since Euro 2004 in my opinion.

I have two issues with that. One is those should have been embedded a while ago. The other is what he’s trying to implement I don’t think gets the best out of our most impactful players. Foden being used as a decoy runner to create space for Phillips being an example of that. The other is the use of the fullbacks in both games.

People overlook Serie A because it's a rank bad league. The team that won it by a mile last year had a large proportion of premier league cast offs and came bottom of their CL group. I don't think anybody underrates Serie A, simply because I think it's very difficult to fathom just how bad it is.
In terms of starting line ups, I would have their keeper, one of their CBs, one of their midfielders and that is it. Berardi is a better player then Insigne imo and would be more likely to force his way into the England team. Though I don't think he's better than Rashford, Sterling, Foden or Sancho tbh

Lol.....it's hardly 90's Serie A but you make it sound like it's the Finnish league or something. What do you define as a "cast-off"? Eriksen and Lukaku who were top Premier League players? Alexis, former Arsenal superstar, who is now a bench-warmer? I was being kind saying I would have Insigne. I would have BOTH Insigne and Berardi ahead of England's wide options. Veratti is simply a more intelligent link-up player and more menacing threat than England's options there. He is miles better than Rashford? I have no idea why England aren't playing Sancho cos he's the only one I think who is potentially superior to those 2 Italians.
Didn't mean to put the question mark after Rashford. Just find it funny anyone would say Rashford is better than Insigne and Berardi. At what? Or Sterling who has been crap this year. Or Foden, a developing player.
**And I was talking of Insigne when I mentioned Veratti.
I doubt a single person would have said Berardi is a better player than Rashford or Sterling 10 days ago. Rashford and Sterling haven't been in good form for a while but I'd say both have shown far more in their careers to be labelled as better players. England have some excellent individual talent, whereas Italy seem to be so much better organised and everyone seems to perform so will.

Yeah.....the exact kind of person who would have believed that not one single German player would make the England team in the 2010 World Cup before getting mauled by Germany. It's hardly surprising that Premier League fans believe football is only played in England. Berardi has been doing the business for years and didn't just become a good player for Italy a few days ago.

How? Who are these incredibly good players that we have? We've some really good talent that is young and have no experience of major tournaments.

Seriously?
Seven players just played in a CL final.

France, Portugal, Italy, Germany, Belgium have better players than England just about everywhere on the pitch than England.

I don't know how anybody can look at that Italy squad and say it's superior to England's. What they do have is a vastly superior manager who has them playing far better as a team than Southgate ever could or would
----------------------------------------------------------------------
If I did a combined Italy/England 11, I'd have their keeper, 2 CBs, 2 CMs and Insigne on the left. The core of their team is very good and people overlooking the Serie A don't know how good many of those players are.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
People overlook Serie A because it's a rank bad league.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Lol.....it's hardly 90's Serie A but you make it sound like it's the Finnish league or something.
