Fair enough. I must have missed it putting the kettle on.
Gareth will now probably rest players tomorrow.

Imagine the drama when third place in Group L is just enough for The Philippines, to the disappointment of Group T’s Nicaragua.
Just wait till the next world cup when the entire group qualifies to the round of 64.

It's the other 150ish countries I feel sorry for. World Cup should mean World Cup!!
Skysports had it as breaking news in large writing
So we can give game time to those needing minutes perhaps Maguire and Henderson?
Who do we face if we come third?

I don't think finishing 3rd is likely. We have a better head to head than Croatia so if they beat Scotland we can't come lower than 2nd. And if Scotland beat Croatia there would have to be a unlikely goal difference swing to put us into 3rd.
2ndat worst looks almost sealed already.

Good chance it would be the winner of Spain’s group. And then the winner of that game would face the winners between our group and Germany’s group. Most roads seem to lead to playing someone from that group.
Fair enough.
Don’t like the format anyway, takes a lot of edge away from the final group games in some groups now.
Through after scoring 1 goal in 2 games
England beat the Czechs 5-0 a couple of seasons ago at Wembley so I’d imagine the Czechs will be trying for damage control and sitting back. Tbf they might not even want to win the group and might take their foot off the pedal as they’re through anyway. England will be more desperate to stay at Wembley and get the win to get the media back onside.

We also lost to them away. No doubt their manager will have a go at out-tacticing (?) Southgate again.

Doesn’t head to head only come into it if goal difference is the same, otherwise Russia would be over Finland.
England vs Germany or England Vs Spain are the two most likely outcomes now although there are other ones too.
Not easy either way. I think I'd fancy Spain more than Germany. However it's nice being able to watch the games with no anxiety and pressure. Even though I'm English I don't get anywhere near as emotionally attached as I do with Utd and never have done. If they lose I am over it within 5 mins. When Utd lose it can take days or more before I am over it.

Holland had won the group before a ball was kicked in MD3 despite second place having 3pts. I think head to head does come into it but maybe not one when there are 3 teams on same points as in Russia's case.
It's all rather confusing though.

I think you are correct, Croatia can’t go above England but Scotland still could depending on goal difference.
Here’s the group-stage tiebreaker procedure, as explained by UEFA. Teams get three points for a win and one point for a draw, and the team with the most points wins the group. If two or more teams are tied in points at the end of group play, ties are broken via the following:
Greatest number of points accrued in the matches between the tied teams.
Goal difference in the matches played between the tied teams.
Goals scored in the matches played between the tied teams.
If those tiebreakers fail to break all the deadlocks, they are applied only to the teams that remain tied. If that does not break the tie, the following are applied:
Goal difference in all group matches.
Goals scored in all group matches.
Wins in all group matches.
Lower quantity of disciplinary points. Players are given three points for a red card (either directly or as a result of receiving two yellow cards in one match) and one point for a yellow card.
Position in the European qualifier rankings.
