Gambling in it self is a scam. I never understood people who gamble.

Even a basic knowledge of probability is enough to understand that the odds are literally stacked against gamblers.

So why do it?

Why do people smoke, take drugs or drink themselves to death? Everyone knows that over consumption of any of these will likely kill you.

So why do it?

Yeah, over consumption is harmful and and not that fun. But I can understand/enjoy moderate consumption of drugs and alcohol. Never got the appeal of gambling though.

you explain eloquently in this comment why gambling quite clearly isn't a scam.

Crossing the road is a gamble. Businesses take gambles everyday. You don't have to be communicating with a bookmaker to gamble.

People who say they've never gambled

For you Shin especially , because not only do you have cars, motorbikes and busses to worry about, you’ve also got unicorns, dancing elves, demons, Batman, and flying monkeys etc to dodge from whatever hallucinogenic you’ve had on your cornflakes that day

There is a difference between taking calculated risks and gambling. For normal activities odds/probability favours the person taking the risk.

Crossing the road for example is extremely low risk activity, and the odds overwhelmingly favours the person crossing the road.

Gambling odds doesn’t favour the gambler by design. So a similar example would be trying to cross the highway.

People gamble because people do sometimes win from gambling. I’ve won lots, I’ve also lost lots. The key is to only bet what you can afford to lose. Some people think nothing of dropping $200 on a night out. Other will take that $200 and turn it into $500 just by being a bit smarter with their accumulator choices. Gambling is neither right or wrong. It’s just another thing (hopefully) responsible adults can choose to do with their money and if done well can result in extra money in ones pocket instead of a hangover from a night spending said money on booze and cigarettes etc. If done wrong it can trigger the ‘chase the losses’ part of the brain which is where most people mess up. If you can find a way to turn that part of the brain off then gambling can be a relatively harmless pursuit.

True, a lot of it comes down to just how an individual's brain works. I enjoy a Saturday afternoon accumulator and a midweek bet if there's a decent number of fixtures over the course of the season. But I'm only getting a fiver a pop and 10-15 quid a week. I very rarely win but it adds a bit of excitement to matches I wouldn't really care about otherwise and I stay well within my means.

I was being flippant re: the road crossing.

What about the business aspect of my comment?

Calculated risk = gamble, whichever way you cut it.

It’s not the same, probabilities are completely different.. Business will never take decision that has higher probability to fail than succeed, not if they want to survive. Large cooperations hardly take any risks.

As I said earlier, gambling is designed to fail. People don’t normally don’t engage in many activities that has higher probability to fail, except for gambling.

And Leeds

Anyway, I've gone for £20 and £10 respectively

2-0 Holland - 13/2

2-2 cover bet in case Czech score early 14/1

posted on 27/6/21

Ideally the Dutch lead 2-0 in the 85th, I cash out for about £100 and Czech score two late ones.

And the bookies pay out.

Whoever gambled in unit stakes, such you put a capital of 2k and do £3 to £5 each bets then in the long run you won't lose much and might win a little. But, 99% of people are greedy and go for higher stakes and lose all in few bets .... That's my taking.

If you’re looking to make steady long term gains from betting then you should be betting 1% of your bankroll, meaning you have a minimum of 100 losing bets.
