Why would he have joined Espanyol when he was Barca's greatest talent and already playing for them at 16? Do Barca often loan out their talent?
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Not sure, I can only go on what Poch said…

“Messi was about to play with Espanyol, the loan deal was practically done.”

“My dream was always to manage the best players, right from when I was with Espanyol and Southampton and that deal was close.

“But then he excelled in the Joan Gamper Trophy and they (Barcelona) changed their minds, so it was finished.

“We have spoken plenty in the years since – we both love Newell’s Old Boys.”

Tbf with the team he has now anything other than the league and CL double will be seen as a failure and probably result in PSG once again looking for a new manager.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

He’s signed a contract extension so I’m sure PSG are happy with how he’s running things. I’m sure he’ll win the league as this is his first season at the club (ja606 rules) as he took over a mess (ja606 rules) - as for the CL, they’d have to be favourites. It’s a challenge that I’m sure Poch would rather be part of than not.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
They can afford to sack managers.

He has to win the CL with the side he has if Messi joins. All their previous managers have won the league with lesser sides but been sacked for failing to win the CL,
He should be no different especially after this summer.

You’re probably right. I guess it all comes down to how they go out. If it’s a meek QF exit to Dortmund then that makes the sacking more likely than losing via a 90th minute dodgy VAR decision to City in the final.

PSG are starting to look ominously placed to mount a serious challenge for the French league title this season.

It is a disgrace that PSG are able to buy him with their oil money instead of Man City or Chelsea buying him with their oil money.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

PSG’s money doesn’t come from oil. It comes from the huge profits of the Qatari tourist trade
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Really?
I'm pretty sure QSI are owned by the Qatar finance ministry.
Also 85% of the countries revenue comes from oil and natural gas exports, so I doubt they just take money from the Qatari tourist trade surplus budget, if such a thing exists, to finance PSG.

Aside from staying at Barca, it’s the perfect move for him.

Do you think City were ever tempted or was that never possible or needed?

Pep was fuming Messi became available the day after they bought Grealish.

He doesn’t need to challenge himself in the PL as his record against English clubs is better than players who’ve played in the PL.

As you say in your OP, his motivation is the CL so he’s at a club where he gets to play alongside his mates and do just that. He’s got great respect for Poch and it’s a perfect deal for all parties. Paris is a great city and the ‘brand’ of PSG suits a guy who’s a legend.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I never said it had to be the PL or that he had anything to prove but him racking up stats in the French league is terribly boring.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
For you maybe.

You need to look at his situation. He didnt want to leave Barca and Barcelona. Messi basically wanted to stat at Barca until he was 36 and then go to the US.

Now he is forced out the club by sheer incompetence and lies. He doesnt want to leave Barcelona (city) because he is happy there with his wife and 3 sons. Now he needs to move to another club, country, whilst 4 days ago he was in the understanding that all he had to do was to put signature on a contract to stay at Barca.

So the choice for Paris is not that strange. Its a club that can afford him, his mates play there and it is distance wise not too far from Barcelona. He's signed a 2 year contract and then will return to Barcelona.

All he wants to do is play football, take care of his family and be happy. He doesnt want to play in the PL to get dogs abuse from Stoke fans on a wet Monday evening.

Messi was on the verge of joining Espanyol on a loan deal, but his brilliant display in the pre-season halted negotiations.

And Paris is 190 miles away from England.

I've only been to Paris once and it was fckin freezing and lashing it down with rain for half the time I was there. I had a coat on too, wouldn't fancy that in shorts and a shirt. Messi has definitely made the tough choice here, hope he can hack it.

Paris is one of the world`s great cities and have been there many times, mostly the weather has been very hot. Great City to visit, you must have been unlucky, although I have also been in winter, when it has been rather cold.

I don't know why he'd ever do that, every club is still a challenge regardless of what stature of club he is playing in.

Sounds like a similar comment to those who say Pep has it easy being at the top clubs with all the money and he should go manage somebody like Tranmere Rovers in League Two!
