Is turning up for international duty after being called up something you can be fined for at club level?

No idea.
Article suggests the clubs needed to agree to them going, and if that was the case, then I assume they can be fined. Not sure if that’s a standard protocol or more courtesy given the pandemic
So are they basically saying that after being called up Spurs asked that they didn't attend but they went ahead and did so without telling Spurs they were going to do so?

Maddening isn’t it. Also what’s all this Croatia business - was this all behind the clubs back? Can’t imagine the club would be over the moon to find out two / three of its players are doing a training session somewhere in Europe with two of Villas team….

I’m not sure if it’s a case spurs asked the players made an exception and didn’t travel, or the default position was always no, and spurs stood firm.
Either way, the players didn’t tell them club they had gone by the looks of it

No he doesn’t Sandy. The players have some culpability but it’s just a messy situation compounded by Spurs, FIFA and their international authorities giving the players mixed orders.

Not sure - a number of other players from UK clubs managed to come to the decision not to travel to South America.
I don’t think the players are solely to blame, but based on what I’ve seen, they’ll take most of it
Apparently the 4 Argentina players declared that they had come into Brazil from Venezuela - as they played Venezuela a few days prior to this but had been in the UK within those 14 days
They weren't training with the club (Spurs)
Initially - Did the club not know they were traveling?

Ace, Spurs gave them orders not to travel apparently, so they have clearly disresepcted the club. That is not good in my book.
I bet you come January when the African Nations start, Liverpool will tell Mane and co to feign injury, and guess what they will and not attend.

The lied about being in the UK bit is irrelevant. It's the Argentine national team and everybody is aware of where they play.
