Agreed. Toby and Jan vertonghen we’re brilliant but we are forgetting Ledley played in some rubbish Spurs teams and was still unreal
In terms of pure talent, natural ability, Ledley King is undoubtedly the best CB we’ve had in recent years. Didn’t even train for his last season or two, rocked up on a Saturday and would clearly be the best player on the pitch. Verts wasn’t good enough to tie up Ledley’s boots, sorry. Toby was close to the same level as Ledders and a tough one to call but I’d still go with Ledley. Playing in the first team in his teens, truly gifted individual. Made the game look easy, read the game incredibly well. As someone said, if Woodgate could move onto Real Madrid, Ledley could’ve also and would’ve been captain. Different gravy altogether.

Very overrated tackle there. If memory serves it’s a bouncing ball over the top that robben takes forever to control and get a shot off.

Anyone that thinks Ledleys tackle on Robben was over rated is absolutely clueless with football. Look at the ground he made up ffs ?

I’m not on here all day unfortunately!
Ledley King was top class, scary to think how good he would have been if not for his bad knee
You cant blame Robben for thinking he had more time than he did. The recovery from King was remarkable. King was superhuman, quick, great reader of the game, super composed on the ball. Excellent in the air. He had it all Thierry Henry said he was the best CB he came up against in the PL
I reckon he would of have been snapped up by Fergie hadn’t it been for his injuries. He was that good.
King Ledley. Class apart. His testimonial was banging. One of the better nights.
Loved Ledley. Proved that you don't need good knees to be a great defender. Comes across as a stand up guy too.
I always enjoyed the pics of Ledley being carried, hammered, out of night clubs.
As good as Verts and Toby were, I'm staggered that many Spurs fans are putting them above Ledley. I think their era flatters them. Both brilliant players and both deserve their place in the Spurs hall of fame but for me Ledley was THE standout defender for us. He's above both of them. Unbelievable defensively, composed coming out from the back. Without his injuries, he'd be up there with Rio, Terry etc as one of the very best.

Totally agree. I wouldn’t put Toby or Verts above Ledley and Verts is one of my favourite players.
King had Vertonghan's calmness on the ball.
He had Toby's ability to tackle, block and read the game
he made every defender alongside him look a lot better.
and he had more pace than both, even with 1 knee.
I would have called my first born Ledley but it was vetoed by "the one who's been carrying this ****ing thing for the last 9 months"

I think some people are getting confused between the concept of Jan/Toby being better players ability wise than King, which they weren’t, and Jan/Toby being better players for Tottenham than King, which they were.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Isn't that just a comment on the fact that both Verts and Toby were more fortunate in the team they played in? I'd argue that King is the better player BECAUSE he played in worse teams. You can't measure a centre back by team success. Pound for pound, if he's better ability wise, he's the better player for Tottenham. Simple as that. That fact that Verts and Toby played with Kane, Son, Dembele etc is a moot point.
It was always so notable that Dawson looked a pretty decent defender with King alongside him but never looked so assured when partnered by Kaboul and others.
What i think is very true of King is that he'd be very comfortable in todays game, where a CBs skill set goes beyond just tackling and heading. He really is a VVD type of CB and has that same level of calm allied with great ability.

Sandy of course is a joke as usual.
Vertonghen and Alderweireld were both very good defenders, no doubt. And they have done well for Belgium.
But neither of them had King's speed of recovery.
But King was more, he was a captain and commander, and an inspiration to the players around him.
I only hope he is having some effect on the defenders we have today!
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Totally agree. I love Toby and Verts, but Ledley king was the daddy of defenders for me. Better defender Ledley was for me.

If I was picking an all time Spurs PL 11 based on performances for us Toby and Verts would be in season or Ledley. Unless I went 3 at the back to accommodate all of them!

Walker__Toby_____Verts___Rose
_____Dembele___Modric
Bale________Kane______Son
And that’s hard lines to certain other players who were very good for us such as Carr, Anderton, Ginola, Sherringhan, Klinsmann, Ledley, Berbatov, Defoe etc.
What would be interesting would be to do an underrated Spurs PL 11. Chadli and Mido both got to be worth a shout. And Assou-Ekotto.

Toby and Verts were instrumental in us being runners up in the PL and becoming a CL club. We weren’t one before them, we’re not one after them. We finished 3rd then 2nd with the best defences in the league, that is a fact. You can’t take away from their contributions to Spurs by saying they played in a better team in order to big King up - they were a huge reason why it was a better team.
And, again, the argument isnt whether either of them was a better individual player - I’m a huge fan of King as we all are - the statement was that what they achieved for Spurs probably surpasses King as his career was so stop-start due to injury. It’s like you might say (example only) that Klinsmann was a better striker than Kane, but who has been a better player for Spurs?
It was unfortunate for King that he had the double whammy of playing in an era of mediocrity for Spurs and of being so hampered by injury. But as I said in my original comment on this thread, I also have no doubt had he not had the knee issues he’d had moved to a Man U or Madrid.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
True, but it could also be noted Ace that Ledley King captained and won a trophy with Spurs beating a fantastic Chelsea side in the final. Vertonghen and Toby didn’t achieve that and didn’t win a thing. Now, I’m not saying that’s Toby and Verts fault, but too win a trophy in a Spurs team that was nowhere near as good as the Spurs sides Jan and Toby played in is also an achievement. Toby and Jan were brilliant players no doubt and Vertonghen remains one of my best players, but Ledley king is our best ever premier league defender hands down.
