Son got a red last year when he broke a leg but it wasn't a red card challenge. Seems if you make a challenge which breaks a leg then it's a red.

A direct leg breaker is considered a violent conduct these days and leads to red card. I remember Luke Shaw's leg break in 2015 when the offender only got a yellow. Rules have changed since then.
