The exorcist and Texas chainsaw massacre will always be up there for me
But American werewolf in London is fantastic ….great horror with dark humour
i guess we need to stick to recent films, eg the innocents is only a recent discovery for me, not for the rest of the world. so, sticking to roughly the last decade:
it follows
the neon demon
hereditary
midsommar
kill list
under the skin
i think probably the neon demon and under the skin are the closest to great films, though i want to rewatch the ari aster ones, which were hugely impressive.
going back just a little further, martyrs is probably the most extraordinary modern horror film i've seen, though not one you want to rewatch too often.

I don't think I have ever enjoyed a horror film. Just don't get what people get out of them. I guess stuff like Psycho! I get from a cinematography perspective but stuff like Hostel and alike I just cannot understand.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Hostel is hardly what I’d consider horror. It was a fad of gore-prawn.
Seems a bit strange to lump all of horror together considering the wide range of genres throughout the decades.

All fantastic, maybe not so much the exorcist for me, but Texas Chainsaw Massacre is a genuine nightmare. Amazing what they pulled off without really showing things.

The atmospheric nature of the film is great with that chime in the background throughout the film adding to it
i suppose if we are allowed more obscure older stuff, i recently saw the cremator, a very odd, and very disturbing, 60s czech film; the tenant by polanski i prefer to repulsion; and night of the demon is a really good (albeit tameish by today's standards) 50s chiller

Not really. I understand that are loads of sub genres. I am just saying I don't see what people see in them. You wouldn't consider Hostel a horror but it clearly is one of those genres you mention.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I’m guessing people get lots of different things. One of which is enjoyment.
Fair enough. Hostel is in a horror sub genre. But it’s a decking awful movie. I can also pick some of the worst movies from a genre and judge the rest by that ruler.
The houses that October built 1 & 2 are interesting movies certainyl worth watching.

Anyways speaking of sub genres, what are the favourites in here?
I might lean more towards paranormal.

Spurs all or nothing. That stays with you.
I thought The Babadook was class.
Not really a horror but pretty horrific, The Snowtown murders. True story and pretty grim.

Ooh, examples?
Didn’t mind Hereditary but found Midsommer boring, whilst a good looking film. Pretty sure 70% of the movie was watching them fckin eating at the table.
It Follows was good, simple but well made.
Gotta love synth heavy soundtracks
I thought Censor was pretty good. A good idea, excellently atmospheric, some quite disturbing moments (especially the ending), the odd jump scare. I think it went too far once or twice but I also think that was kind of the point.
Not seen it.
Not huge on jump scares as it feels paper thin in the end usually. Like building and sustaining a sense of dread. That keeps me immersed.
"The last great horror film you’ve seen"
The new Home Alone looks like a contender
Another one huh? Has anyone actually seen any past part 2?
