That West Ham manager is doing an impressive job on a fraction of our budget...

Grave doubts about the club's ability to pick the right manager for the job have long been my primary reason to be cautious about sacking Solskjaer.

Agree with others though that Southgate isn't going to walk from the England job. We'll manage to find someone worse or more ill-fitting than him.

It’s because of that it frustrates me that they stick with the managers for as long as they have. They obviously aren’t good at picking managers, and can’t see the obvious early on. They just prolong the inevitable, which makes things worse.

We’d be better off if they were more reactionary, as it’d increase the probability of them appointing the right man eventually.

It would also increase the probability of missing out on someone like SAF.

To be fair, it doesn’t matter who they go for. Every manager they have appointed has failed to live up to expectations, and that will be the case for every manager who is appointed.

That’s the problem that Ferguson’s reign has created. An expectation has been created and it will undoubtedly fail to be met.

No one is good enough.

I'm pretty sure expectations have been reset by now. There's plenty of ground between falling short of winning 50%+ of league titles and never getting close to challenging.

Have they really?

If that’s the case then why are articles such as this appearing with increasing regularity on United’s board?

This article in particular has been created based on nothing more than a supposition. And the manager being identified as not being good enough has no affiliation to United whatsoever, yet has proved himself capable at International level, yet is still deemed as a “careful what you wish for” appointment.

Expectations are huge at United. Finishing 2nd last season counts for nothing clearly, and an indifferent start after a handful or two of games has resulted in many United fans wanting the current manager out.

Many want the manager out after nearly three years of crap performances.

The expectations at United have clearly dwindled over the years since Fergie left, hence why Ole is still in the job and has many fans backing him still.

Nobody is good enough if the expectations are to repeat what Fergie did. But I don’t think there’s anyone that has that expectation, because it’s a ridiculously unrealistic one. Playing good football and competing for top honours isn’t.

a valid point, but just look at the varied approach to managerial appointments since Ferguson retired.

Moyes - a proven PL manager who had earned the right to step up at a bigger club and was endorsed by Ferguson himself.

He wasn’t given any time.

Van Gaal - a proven top class manager.

Jose - a proven top class manager, and one who did actually win trophies, despite his toxic nature. This toxic nature was known about, so why he was ever appointed remains a mystery.

Ole - a boot room acquisition, a la Liverpool’s 1970’s and 80’s approach which proved so successful for them. I still maintain that Ole was appointed and has Ferguson behind him as a silent motivator calling the shots - something that Van Gaal and Jose wouldn’t allow because of their stature in the game.

Every single managerial appointment has politics behind it.

United are fumbling and have been hoping for almost the last decade. Yet they remain right up there, perhaps not genuinely challenging for the top honours but certainly not falling away into mediocrity. And yet despite all of this, the fans are clearly and understandably not happy, and coming out with articles like this descrediting managers who have not even been mentioned once as possible successors to Ole.

It all just seems so desperate.

And that varied approach hasn’t brought good football or a competitive team at the top, let alone both. Which is why most would consider them failures.

Southgate’s actually been mentioned as a target for the United job in the media, actually. But this article is more a piiiisstake out of the decision makers of the club based on their history of appointing the wrong men as manager. Don’t see the issue. We can laugh about it.

Your fans took the p out of your own club for 40 years before you won the Arab Lotto. Short memories now you lot with your oil rich UAE overlords.

This isn’t about City. While your deflection is predictable coming from you, it nevertheless completely misses the point.

And it also doesn’t negate the point being made.

Stay on topic.
