What is a small percentage ?

And how amd where do we accomodate, finance, educate and medicate them?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Initially whilst the asylum application is being processed, I don’t know how long this takes, they are put up in detention centres, repurposed former army barracks and whatnot, that have been described as squalid, unfit for human habitation and against the UNHRC. It’s alright though, they get £33pw to live on and they’re not allowed to work.

That £33pw is one of the lowest of EU countries. Hardly an incentive to come here.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
According to the gov it is £39.63?

Asylum added 0.04% to our population last year.

If that's putting our country under pressure, despite making £16bn from arms sales in the same period I would suggest we are being run incredibly badly.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

The elephant in the room is the aging UK population.

"The number of people aged 65 years and over is expected to increase by 1.6% over 2021-22 to total 12.7 million, accounting for 18.9% of total UK population, the highest proportion this age group has ever comprised."

Don there's an awful lot of resources there for the taking but the Tory government don't collect it for helping society.

The UK could easily afford 1 million migrants a year.

I'm not saying the UK should take 1 million a year, but the original.point Don made was the UK couldn't afford it, they could if they decided to.

Wow. Imagine if there was a disease that disproportionately killed off that group. The savings.
Thank goodness nothing like that has ever happened.

I can't get my head round a million à year. One year maybe, but a decade gives us another London.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Don't think you'd get that many unless a really catastrophic event happened somewhere.

At the moment I think we in the UK are 6th in terms.of numbers. Germany had the most at 100k ish. We had 30k or there about.

Again behind the headlines, the population in UK.isnt static. So people here die or move also and immigrants also move back. So its never always an extra x amount of people.

The concerns with housing etc I've addressed earlier. However it's worth noting that the whole income and benefits issue is usually false. I mean even with EU migrants who were eligible for benefits it was only for 6 months or so and then they had to find work.

I get what you mean though. If a million people came in year in year out that would definitely cause issues. Fortunately it doesn't happen. The biggest migrations happened when we needed folk.

We struggle to build 200k homes a year yet already we 'need' to build almost twice that to catch up the shortfall.

For anyone interested the RHA (Road Haulage Association) amongst others were giving evidence today to the commons business committee on the UK supply chain crisis.

Their assessment was pretty damming.

"@RHADuncanB is asked if govt 5,000 visas programme (expires Feb 28) will make a difference? "No" he replies.

"If you were designing a visa system to fail, you’d design it something like this.” he says."

Ironically the reason all the racists voted against Brexit is because they’d rather have European immigration. They see white Europeans as allies. Importing Poles and other Slav peoples was the Far Right insurance policy.

Whate everlr the cause of the housing shortage, there isna shortage, so how do we accomodate these people?
----------------------------------------------------------------------

I'll try and address this, I worked in regeneration for most of my life and maybe have an insight into this that isnt headline grabbing.

Firstly you have to understand that saying "housing shortage" doesn't mean ALL England has a housing shortage. Mainly it tends to be in certain areas, so London has a shortage of social housing but not houses. People don't want to pay private landlord rent as it's a lot, can't afford buying a house as they cost a lit so want a council house. Technically it's not a shortage. It's about wanting the cheapest option

Other places suffer similarly in that private rent is more than council rent so people want that option. Also they want a nice house. So a 2 bed apartment type in a block of flats is not desireable, rather have a 3 bed semi. Again not shortage.

To put into factual terms, and I'm going off the top of my head a little here and from last couple of years, a headline said we needed something like 300k new houses a year. Which in and of itself sounds like a shortage, right? What they didn't tell you is we had a about 300 empty properties at the same time.

A lot of houses in my area, particularly older terraced properties, are bought to rent. Often by people in the South. The properties are let on 6 month contracts at a time. So any family renting them is not only paying a little more than a similar council house but are also not allowed to settle. Many live in these houses for years but it's a 6 monthly contract. If the landlord wants to raise the rent and Tennant doesn't agree, bye bye Tennant.

I'll leave it there for now. However the health and school issues you raised have similar explanations. Not least that foreign nurses are employed by the nhs, housed in rented accomodations (landlords again) and charged yearly fees by the nhs (600 quid is the figure I recall but could be wrong) for using the service they provide.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
If there arent enough for those that want / need them, there is a shortage (of social housing)

@Don

A report in around 2020 suggested that specifically secondary school pupils have remained pretty constant over the years. The problem wasn't pupils. It was the givts shift to academies where councils don't have an input with regards to intake or class sizes and the bigger problem of teachers leaving.

Another report suggests that by 2023 there will be a 10% increase in secondary school pupils. Which in itself suggests a problem right? Actually no the intake increase isn't an issue in and of itself. The biggest problem is 40% of teachers leaving the profession within 5 years of qualifying.

The reasons for leaving are basically wages l, but also violence in classrooms and schools.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

10% increase is a lot of kids to find places for. Are there schools out there able to accomodate that? I know there arent where i am.

Not a shortage though is it if you can be rehoused adequately?

The houses are there.

I don't get why an immigrant getting a house is an issue, yet a local person without a job and on benefits not wanting what is being offered, because they want a bigger garden or an extra room is ok and a shortage.

Why us that though? Is it because of a 10% increase in kids (for the country incidentally not per area) or the fact that 40% teachers leave?

The latter is an issue even if we decrease by 10%
