Something along the lines of, hello Mr Ten Hag. We wondered if you would like to join us in a season or 2 when you have done what you want with Ajax, and get us back to playing nice, attractive, succesful football. You would. Great. OK. We will get some contracts drawn up and notify Ajax of our intentions. In the meantime, let us know any tactics you would like us to introduce, the current squad and any future additions youd like us to look into.

For all we know this is what the club are trying to do, but if not then they should. It worked for City (helps theirs was a world class manager admittedly) but it beats the previous approach of appointing the best available at the time one is needed.

Simple really. Give Conte an 18 month contract and see what he can do with the squad and how he gels with the suits. If it’s going well and actual progress is being made then extent it by a year.

It's 2021.

Hire managers.

-If it's a mistake hold your hands up and rectify it

-If they're successful but then go stale then both parties move on and win again.

-If a new Fergie or even a Klopp is stumbled upon then amazing but giving poor managers time on the off chance they'll turn into Fergie is, frankly, gross incompetence.

Get in Conte or Zidane, win trophies and by the time it goes stale with them Tuchel will probably be avaliable as the same thing happens with him and Chelsea.

Then after him Nagelsmann maybe avaliable due to taking Bayern as far as he can and look before you know it three world class successful manager's have darkened the door at Old Trafford and delivered major trophies.

It's not hard and the penny seems to have dropped at every other major European club. It's no coincidence that the most successful clubs of this century all change their managers more often than underwear.

A very good idea and what Southampton have done for years. The Red Bull franchise too.

Unfortunately, in practical terms Ten Hag would be breaching his contract on the player list side and almost certainly on the 'agreement to join at a future date' side? You'd be pretty pi55ed if your manager was not wholly focussed on your own team, no?

Anyway, overall good in principle though my mind keeps leaping back to the crusty committee in Moneyball and a vision of Fergie, Bobby, Denis and whoever else sitting in a dingy room clinging to the ways of the past.
