Wasn’t Jose’s first game also 3-2 after being three up? Rings a bell…

Yeah I already mentioned this on another thread. 3-2 against West Ham when we were 3-0 up in that one too.

The fitness and mentality issue has been there ever since Poch left. We just seemed to stop doing sufficient levels of fitness work under Jose - I remember Kane needing to have a lie down after scoring at home to West Ham.

Nuno seemingly never tried to address the fitness issues, it absolutely has to be one of the first things on Conte’s list as well as building a proper defence

You can only read so much into it after one game. My take:

- great to see us actually pass forward in the first half, with some evident patterns of play / passing / football
- looks like we’ll engage the ball higher up the field - midfield two were quite high as well
- passing out from the back. I can’t remember doing it so frequently under Jose and NES, but last night felt like it was the MO for goal kicks
- the defence, just awful. I don’t know what it is. Doesn’t matter the formation, the manager or the players, our defenders just look lost. This will be Conte’s biggest challenge IMO
- Lloris - we’re lucky to have him
- Kane - sat higher for the most part. Hold up play in the second half was invaluable. It’s only one game but his performance gives me hope he’ll turn a corner quickly
- Royal - again only one game, but that wing back role looks like it’ll suit him better than RB in a 4-4-2
- as people have said - fitness, fitness, fitness.

Agree with pretty much all of this especially the point about Lloris. Brilliant servant for the club.

At least the attacking was good when we attacked. If we can produce more of that through better fitness and quality then we'll be on the right track, regardless of how much the defence lets us down.

Considering Conte has only had 24 hours with the team i don't think the game last night was that bad. There are certain players who continue to make mistakes most games and the biggest culprits for this were Dier and Hogberg again last night.

Huge job ahead of Conte but he’s no mug, he knew that from the get go. Couple of months intense training, work out who the wastrels are, bring a new CB in Jan. Then we might see an upturn.

Need to beat Everton on Sun, games after that look winnable.

One of the real positives right now is the the run of games Conte will start with. Yeah there are no easy matches but at the same time that is about as benign a start for his career at Spurs as he could have asked for. Gives him the best chance to start implementing his ideas.

Thought both Winks and Danchez were good when they came on.

It just shows what a difference a positive frame of mind and can for players. That's all we've been asking for. We looked in control and were looking to influence the game from the first minute. 3 up and cruising and you just knew we'll find away to let them back in. With the players back there it's inevitable.

I've got every confidence though that Conte will get the positions sorted. It might take a bit of time but we'll get there. The system suited us better last night, mystifying why Nuno never attempted it, but it seems to give us more control in possession. The back 3 have got an alternative now when they are playing out with the widemen available or our fowards dropping into midfield. Romero was always looking for it. With better players you can already see how well it's going to operate. All in all very positive. With a couple of windows and a better work rate and mentality we'll be fine.

Think, like Mourinho, last night he realized the squad isn't as good as it looks at face value. He's not a manager that cries time as a matter of course, so you know he means it.

But, unlike Mourinho, he'll actually improve you lot - annoyingly.
