Not a massive fan still to be honest, we do look more solid but we will see how that holds up against better teams. I want to see what he does when Xhaka is fit again if he's fair and consistent then Xhaka goes on the bench, I have a feeling he will put him straight back in. Also really not happy with how he's used and managed Martinelli, the player has genuine star quality and he's just being ruined at the moment.
I actually think there is a lot of promise with this Arsenal side and, although I don't always watch you, you do seem to be producing less inconsistent performances this season, although it is still early days yet.
Continue in the way you have started, you are a top 4 contender for me, however, if the inconsistencies begin to reappear, then consolidating an EL position would be an achievement for the season in the league.
From a neutral perspective, you can see more clearly Arteta's style of play after bringing in the necessary players for the team and in another window or two he may be able to add more players and get rid of some he probably doesn't need that theoretically should make this style and team stronger. I just feel he may eventually run into the current Solskjaer issue at United.
We seem a bit stronger these days, plus Liverpool aren't as good as they were. Would love to go back to the days we used to beat them at anfield regularly. Fingers crossed.
Jury is still out for me. Arteta has been in charge for almost 3 years and we are only now seeing a pattern of play. A pattern that we actually saw from Vieira first against us. So I am still undecided if this is coming from him or just copying what paddy is doing at Crystal Palace. Its working so you may ask why does it matter? and that will be answered when teams adjust and we have to as well to counter their adjustments.
After watching Josh Kroenke interview it seems that CL is a minimum requirement and we should hold the management and Arteta to that.

That's unrealistic imo, NO ONE had us getting into the top 6 at the start of the season but now if we don't get top 4, Arteta should be held accountable, really?
There was a point where even when we were winning, there was nothing in our performances to suggest that he should continue with us.
Right now, it's looking like the signings he's made have been perfect in terms of the character and skill set he asks for, so I think he has finally earnt the right to continue. I'm still not fully convinced that we're on the up for the long term, rather than just being in a good moment. But we do have some exciting young players and he does seem to be shifting the mentality of the club with these younger players.

The reason why no one had us into top 6 was because Arteta had shown no signs of achieving that in the past with two 8 place finishes and our worst season for 25 years. I suppose thats the point of this thread because that would have meant termination of contract at most other clubs. But the owner backed Arteta with money. So why shouldn't he or we expect him to get us back into the top 4? I am not talking of competing for the title or winning a cup as well as you would expect after such a big spend for other 'top' managers. If you really do believe Arteta is a top manager shouldn't you have some expectation of him?

My point was the judgement at the end of this season when it would be almost 3 years. Technically 2 and half years. How long do you need?
10 games undefeated, mostly wins, but a relatively kind fixture list between the beginning of September and now.
A draw at Liverpool would be a good result. The games for the rest of the calendar year look winnable.
Is he the man for the job? Quite a few things to consider before answering that question in 2021.
Is he the man to finally bring an end to our gradual 15-year slide down the table? .... The jury's still out.
Is he the man to break tradition and transform us into a more pragmatic and difficult side to beat?..... Yes.
Is he the man we can rebuild a noticeably young squad around?...... Jury's still out on that too. That's pretty much Edu's department these days.
Is he the man to keep said rebuilt squad together long enough to take us to the next level? ....... I genuinely don't know.
Is he a big enough name to attract top tier talent? ......No. At least not yet. Not with household names like Conte calling the shots at a clubs like Spurs.
Is he the man to get us back into Europe?.....We've been miles off the pace required for a Top 6 place for a couple of seasons now. And it will only get harder as more and more club chairmen throw down the gauntlet by investing in their sides. Having said that, 65 points and a Europa place isn't exactly beyond the realms of possibility for Arteta sometime over the next 2 seasons. Maybe even a CL place at some point.
Is he the man for a club (and owner) happy enough to settle for the odd Cup run every few years?.......... Yes

Yes really. You can't hold anyone else accountable for his back to back miserable failure after he spanked 150 mil.
Bare in mind the ONE GAME A WEEK advantage we have over most if not all potential top 6 rivals plus the fact that we'll get to play most of the top contenders through the busiest part of the fixture schedule, THEN get what must be the easiest run-in in years.Expecting anything less than 4th place from Arteta now would be criminal on the part of Arsenal fans.
Especially after the YEARS of biyatching and moaning about how the club ownership is so accepting of mediocrity.
* Will go on the record right here and state that aside from mass injury decimating the squad, the only way this squad will fail to achieve 4th or above is if Arteta reverts back to last season's way of playing.
So long as he sticks with high pressing attacking football PL ARSENAL football as the predominant (as since game 4 of this season), then by virtue of the fixture list and our no Euro games advantage combined, we WILL finish 4th or higher.
Revert to Artetaball more than the odd game or two and we'll be lucky to get 6th.

I get what you’re trying to say, but I don't really see us playing any different from last season.
Other than games like Watford, we've been quite happy to soak up pressure and hit teams on the counter. Often averaging sub 50% overall possession stats. Occasionally dipping down to the 20s for long periods as soon as we go ahead in a game. Even despite our relatively "easier" run of fixtures.
Watch any Arsenal game, and you can tell exactly when the order comes in for everyone to drop the anchors and shut up shop.
The only thing different this season is that we've managed to score 3 more goals than we had at the same point last season. While conceding the same amount.
It's still too early to read anything into the season so far.
tbf Gillespie I think there is a slight difference and I think we have a more defined style.
We have pushed up as a team more and have started to win the ball back higher up the pitch. ESR and Saka are now first choice and both are taking turns to come into the middle to support a deeper striker (Laca).
In my opinion its similar to how Wenger used to set up.
Continue in the way you have started, you are a top 4 contender.

When we want to attack, we push up higher now which is a huge difference as Luiz couldn't do that last season. In Ben white we have some who is as good as Luiz was in the ball, while also being able to dribble from his own box to the opposition's and lay it off for an attacker.
The back 4 is also comfortable shifting across to a back 3 when the left back goes forward now because of tomiyasu, which helps defending counters. All the defenders now are good athletes as well as being good on the ball. Ramsdale is also a significant improvement on Leno, on the ball and catching crosses.
We do revert to Arterrorist ball too often after scoring for my liking though. I don't know yet if this is the managers preference or if the team just can't keep it up. Look at lacazette, for example, he's blowing holes in the ozone layer after 30 mins of pressing. We have to remember we are incorporating 4 or 5 new players in the first team (including Tavares of late), they still need time together to work out everybody else's patterns of play. Do the jury's out on that one until I see more evidence.

I fear you maybe spot on. I just hope a bit like Josh Kroenke that he is learning that there really is no point slowly strangling yourself to an inevitable sack and go for it this season.
Given how poor we've been since Arteta took over it's going to take a far more significant period of improvement before we can say he's doing a good job.
Things are promising though, it's great to see some better characters in the side and you have to credit the management team for bringing those players in (while being laughed at by most, including myself).
Tactically I'm still not sure about his approach, the attacking play is rarely fluid but is improving. Obviously his hands were forced in CM by the blessing that is Xhaka's injury but what happens when he's fit again, does he come straight back in ruin the team?
Let's hope he really has turned a corner and leant from his mistakes, tactically he was woeful for 2 season and we certainly shouldn't be getting to giddy yet but there's certainly a bit more light at the end the tunnel.
One final thing, the Liverpool game this weekend won't indicate much, even if we get pummeled. Liverpool are a seriously strong side regardless of the last couple of games.
With the lay of the land atm top 4 is achievable, but you can't rule out the possibility of the likes of Man Utd improving (after maybe getting a new manager) or same for Spurs, so it's conceivable that we could miss out on top 4 without it necessarily being a failing of the manager.
