I know a United fan I can’t say much with our recent record but you have cashed in when his stock was high after winning the FA cup.

The problem was that he was the only one scoring regularly at the time. Now that he has stopped, no other striker in the squad has stepped up either. Its taken a very long time for the fanbase to recognise that Arteta plays a very dour brand of football.

Im sure there will be loads of takers for a 32 year old in poor form with poor discipline and on £350k a week
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Dunno, I know of a striker who has scored a quarter of the PL goals Auba has this season, who was rated at over £150m a couple of months ago...

We'll happily hang on to our mis-firing talisman.

You lot probably want Ozil MkII out the door, right?

I think Xhaka will be given the captaincy

Yup, looking at the candidates he seems to be the only option - a ridiculous situation to be in but it is what it is...

I would add that I don't think Aubameyang was a good captain anyway, strikers never make good captains - unless their name is Thierry Henry...

Henry was a crap captain. Where is the narrative that he was good come from? He wanted away, and was only given the armband to try and keep him. He was aloof, unhelpful to younger players in the squad and downed tools in his 2nd and final season as captain.

When I sat by the touchline at Highbury he was running the whole freaking game - giving verbal bollockings left right and centre, I think he was the right man for the job.

I think Ben White will get it, btw. English, brought for the long term, praised for his influence in the dressing room.

Wouldn't want a 'keeper having it. Tierney, maybe, but a bit injury prone. ESR? Not for me.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I agree with regards to Ramsdale. Whilst he's clearly doing a good job helping to organise the defence and is a leader back there I don't think a keeper should be captain - I wouldn't mind him being vice captain though. We do need an outfield player.

I'd be happy with Gabriel he leads by example, I'm not sure I've seen those leadership qualities from White yet and he's still very new to the team so may be a lot of pressure to put on him when he should just be focused on performing, on the other hand it could have the opposite effect and bring out the best in him. I'd pick either of these two CBs, third choice would be Tierney, third because he's quite injury prone.

Yeah I don't get that, I mean why? This had to be the single most noticeable thing about the performances. The football was slow and dull, he was always berating players, the players were all miserable and we were too. Team hardly seemed a jolly bunch did they

As much as Ramsdale seems a great character, one the team really benefits from I don't think it's right for captaincy and him being a keeper isn't ideal.

We don't really have anyone who comes across as a true captain which is probably why the club just defaults to whoever is senior, I don't agree with that btw as it's meant we've made terrible choices (Xhaka and Aubu for instance).

Fabregas may have always had eyes for a Barca move but he was something resembling a proper captain albeit not a legendary one like Adams or Vieira. He only had 3 seasons(?) as captain but in reality he led the side without an armband for the majority of his time at the club.

As mentioned, we have no one you'd choose as anything close to an ideal captain in the current squad Tierney is probably the closest option albeit not necessarily a "good" option.

Ideal captain position is CB or CM, not LB. Add the injuries to that leads me to the conclusion (as much as I like him and did before most Arsenal fans when many were criticising him early on in his time with us) that he's not the best choice for captain.

Yeah I know what you mean! But we definitely don't have any current CM's that suit and I'm just really unsure on the CB's.

If White has the character for it and the talent to be a top level CB then he'd be the perfect choice, For me the jury on those two factors are still very much out

The worst thing we could possibly do is return the captaincy to Xhaka so that's what we'll probably do

Yeah I've seen more from Gabriel on the pitch than White to make me think he's the more ready of the two. He leads by example in terms of his performances and clearly has fire in his belly. Is his English good enough? Well I've heard it has improved a lot and he's done well with his English lessons since arriving so maybe?

White is still in his first season with us so I find it hard to imagine he'd get the captaincy this early on. I think his performances have been good overall and he could be considered a candidate but this type of pressure could be a burden at this stage for him, on the other hand it may focus him even more and bring out the best in him.

I'm just glad I'm not the one deciding as it's clearly a difficult decision.

If Xhaka becomes captain again then Arteta & the club are once again showing a complete lack of understanding about the way the majority of fans feel towards him. The guy was also flashing his knickers at Roma & Mourinho this summer... I will be furious if that happens.

Yeah I assumed Gabriel's English still isn't up to scratch so had ruled him out at least for now (he recently gave an interview suggesting it was better but the interview was in Portugese and I kinda get the impression there's work to do). Unfortunately it's one of those things, I think that also really hampered Emery sometimes too.

Agree about the club/Arteta and the fans having wildly differing understandings on Xhaka. He may well possess plenty of things that would make a good captain but he also has traits that 100% rule him out, temperament and football ability being the most obvious ones let along anything else.

I kind of hope Xhaka is made captain. Just gives me another reason to hate Artitler

Hasn't Arteta said its going to be a leadership group? So basically it is Laca and Xhaka.

Last one to do that was Emery. Its a sign of weakness.

Pretty much.

I don't think its a good sign when you are hesitant to name a captain in case it offends players or fans.
