Vermaelen, Arteta and Mertesacker barely played as captain.
You could go back to Henry (wantaway, barely played in 2nd season as captain, and seen as having a negative impact on the rest of the squad) who only got the gig to try and keep him.
Disagree with Cesc, though. He was a captain who led by example for the first half of his time. He was a good choice, shame the world cup happened and distracted him.
Also, van Persie was a well know diversive character and had issues with a few of his team mates. And, clearly, didn't have that much faith in the club.

Maybe this was because a lot of those teammates were not showing the right mentality?
Cesc alluded to this in some of his interviews.
Easy to be a good captain when you've got good teammates ultimately.
Not sure Vieira would have been great surrounded by weak minded Arsenal team mates. there would be fights all the time
What about Ramsdale he loves celebrating?
Should give it back to Xhaka...seems like a level headed sort...his deputy needs to prepare for a busy time mind

Eww! No. Just no...
Van Persie - Actually a good choice. Asides his injury record he had everything. Unfortunately did not believe in the Wenger project and he was right
---------------------------------
No, he was injured half of every season for 6 in a row. There's at least 3 of the 6 where despite the tweenies squad, we were real title contenders...then the criple took his 4-5 month break effing it all up.
Now that's out of my system...
Right now Xhaka needs to focus on his own game and that alone, doesn't need the added responsibility of the captaincy. He's just back from a long lay off and most AFC fans wanted him sold last summer. He really has got more than enough on his plate to deal with already. Tierney doesn't present as a leader at all other than by playing example and Gabriel still has to calm his own discipline demons (good future shout though).
The armband needs to stay on Lacazette for now, he's the teams leader anyway. Once He goes, then Xhaka can keep it warm a lil while for Ramsdale. Leads by example and by instruction whilst also stepping up to play disciplinarian and control his teammates. That boy was born to be a captain, just needs to mature a little more first.
Can't agree with much of your analysis to be honest
• Gallas - semi agree with this one, he wasn't a good choice, really lacked emotional maturity despite being a great and versatile player. He did ok until he really didn't.
• Fabregas - good captain, had been the leader of the side well before it became official.
• Van Persie - not a good choice but kind of understandable, by the time he became captain he had matured a lot but from reports of much of his Arsenal career he wasn't an ideal character. You can't erase that from players minds but a fresh start at United made him more suitable there.
This is where we enter a phase of perfectly "average" captain's in the sense they were all acceptable choices because there wasn't really a better choice if that makes sense.
• Vermaelen - as above
• Arteta - as above
• Mertesacker - as above
• Koscielny - as above
The fairly sensible choices end
• Xhaka - terrible choice and terrible player
• Aubameyang - poor choice, disciplinary issues at Arsenal and previous clubs should've been noted and ruled him out. You can't have a captain who doesn't set a good example. Even at his prime he'd be a poor choice because of that, him being off form merely compounds the issue
