Dodged a bullet with Ronaldo

City have been playing United in the transfer windows for a few years now. Pretending to be interested in Sanchez, Maguire, Fred so they pay over the odds and then be left with duds.

The Ronaldo one has to be the best though. No intention to buy him and the United ego kicked in and they bought a has been because there was a rumour that City wanted him.

When you put it like that, they really have been finessing United for years lol

The only reason I would have wanted him would be to wind up the United fans - They still haven't got over Tevez.

Luckily I have no say over who the club buys but the people who do certainly dodged a bullet if they were serious, which I don't believe they were.

Remember it Fergie who swung the deal, not Ole or the Glazers so any malcontents should direct their criticism towards him.

I think Ronaldo would have done well for City tbf.

United have certainly regressed since he joined them though. Fernandes' performances in particular have dropped off a cliff. He also flopped at the euros in the same team as Ronaldo. Perhaps they won't ever function together.

No chance, his work rate is not good enough for our team

I know a few United fans who would agree with this.

Think he would have been much better for us too, still glad we didn’t though.

I doubt Bernardo, Cancelo and Rodri would be having such stellar seasons if we'd brought Ronaldo in on twice their wages but with half their workrate.

The fact that United, admittedly with 2 games in hand, sit closer to the relegation zone than they do to City's 53 points tells the effect he has on a team. Not saying that United would be top without him, as they clearly aren't very good, but they should be closer.

Wanted to say something like this for a long time but did not get around to doing it.

If memory serves me right, there was a certain Pogba as well?

The funniest thing is that the deluded United fanbase actually believe that any player would choose to go to Old Trafford if City were genuinely interested!!

"City wanted him, but we've got him!!"

I can’t think of a player less suited to Pepball. Mind you if you wanted a object lesson in why City are 22 points ahead you just had to look at the press from both teams last night. Lacking energy organisation and commitment.

For me the most pleasing thing is that, for the most part, City seem to recruit 'team' players rather than 'me' players. There are players for whom everything seems to have to go through them (Sanchez at Arsenal was one) and that inevitably weakens the team. I really don't see that at City, even players like KDB, who would be in any World XI take their turn in rotation and don't seek to make the whole game about giving them the ball.

I agree. I think City as a team are cohesive and energetic enough to just have had Ronaldo in the box to score a feck-ton of goals. And he's still a top class finisher.

Utd don't have the structure or legs to carry Ronaldo; City do.

However good he may or may not have been though, the season thus far has pretty conclusively proved City didn't need him.

Ronaldo, with his selfish and arrogant playing style, could have done damage to Pep's team. Man. U. deserves this "has-been"!

Mbappe and Haaland would struggle in our team right now. Ronaldo would tear the league apart for City.

There is a reason Pep Guardiola did not push Manchester City to complete the signing of Cristiano Ronaldo.
Yes, he would have had to change the way his team played, but he accepted that. He understood Ronaldo would bring goals and was prepared to go away and reshape the side to accommodate him.
What he could not reconcile, however, was more of a personal issue. Guardiola explained that if he wanted Kevin De Bruyne to rest for a game, he would, and no argument. If he wanted De Bruyne to sit on the bench, there would be no complaints. And even if he told De Bruyne to come off at half-time, that wouldn't be an issue.
Over the years at Manchester City, he had reinforced the idea that the team ethic was all-important. There was not a single player putting himself ahead of the group. The team spirit was second to none. Every man, no matter how talented, left his ego at the door.
And then he was going to open that door and ask his squad to welcome a player who remains the epitome of the individual in a team sport — CR7. While he knew what Ronaldo would bring to Manchester City, he feared that, in the eyes of the players, signing him would make the manager a hypocrite and risk jeopardising all he had built.
Worse, Guardiola feared he would share that view. City did not pursue the deal.

A great summary by Martin Samuel

Pressing is a key part of the way City play, winning the ball back in the first 15 seconds after they have 'lent' it to the opposition. Pep seems personally offended if the opposition have the ball for more than 15 seconds and I am pretty sure CR7 wouldn't have bought into that high tempo press/ cover back philosophy.

Ronaldo ain’t the problem, its most of our squad have forgot how to play football. Ronaldo has stopped this season from being a disaster already. For sure Ronaldo finishing could be better in some games but our main problem is we stopped playing like a team. Bruno also goes missing when he plays when it matters now. Big moments bottled like Villa at home and againat Wolves at home.

I honestly think if we didn’t have Ronaldo, we would have no chance of top 4 or a fight for the CL.

You can see a lot of players have regressed this year. Also the new manager seems to be too negative.
