No to Trippier, useless against pacy wingers and there are loads of them in the prem

Feels like this is pension move for Tripps. Good on him. Wonder if he told his mates to place a bet on the transfer this time..

He was absolutely awful in his last season with us. Good delivery, but a dreadful defender. If Newcastle play him in a back 4 they will be even worse defensively. Definitely not good enough for us.

It going to be fun watching Newcastle blow their money on a bunch of mercenaries this window. I read yday they bid €35m for Botman at Lille but he turned the move down.

He won La Liga and under Simeone he will have learned the art of defending from one of the most defensive coaches out there.

He lacks pace which has always been his issue when faced up to a pacey winger. Not sure he'd be great as a wing back because of this.

I'd say a very steady and experienced purchase for NUFC, just what they need, but not what we need.

Trips has said a few times that there were behind the scenes issues in his last year with us that were affecting his performances. No idea what that was. He also had that niggling groin injury.

Before that year he was good for us, and has been exceptional for Atletico in the time he's been there, a regular in a title winning team. He'd improve us, I'm sure of it.

But... he'll be getting paid obscene cash at newcastle and will be up north near his family. Makes perfect sense for his last few years.

That's a fair bit of money for a new scapegoat.

i liked him but had a torrid final time of it at spurs. however hes no good for us no imo, you can slag off crossing of Emerson all you like but his positioning and defensive work, energy and pace is so far clear of Trippier.

Reguilon at LB has been just as bad attacking wise tbh. so annoying Sessegnon is made of glass. just we dont have another option really on the other flank as Doherty is done

Trip is FAR better than Royal as a WB in the system that Conte plays with 3 CBs

Royal is crap going forward

posted on 5/1/22

Trippier has been very good defensively for Atletico.

Improved massively in that respect under Simeone but he's probably got max 2 years before he declines.

This is actually a myth. Watch the Watford match again. Royal could have had 3 assists with better finishing.

As usual, knee here reactions. Royal had excellent game against Liverpool but all is suddenly forgotten.

We'd get a hell of a lot more out Kane with Trips delivery/ set pieces

posted on 5/1/22

I don't think Royal is crap. He's a decent defender and that's what we needed most. He can improve going forward, remember it's still a new team and system for him. I'm confident he'll come good

I like Royal but I think he's a very good defensive RB in a back 4.. That's not how we play. We had the same issue on the other side last season. Reggie is playing much better this year as he has Davies covering him, he was pretty poor in a back 4, same is true of Sessignon

thats not true though Reguilon hasnt been much better at LWB than Royal has been at RWB. just the classic of overly scrutinising more recent signings.

Trips is decent but isn’t what we need, he also isn’t better than Emerson.

In the instance of vs Watford we were in a unique situation where Emerson had to cross the ball into a box consisting of 6 defenders and a keeper with only really Kane or Son to aim at. I don’t think Tripps does much better in that situation.

What we need is as another option is a wingback who is effective 1v1 and crossing. Someone like Lamptey for example - as the wingback role is so important in our team it wouldn’t be smart to spend on a player (Trippier) who isn’t really an upgrade.

I posted that on my match ratings article minutes after the game so maybe they are a reader?

I did listen to the pod and they mentioned Lamptey which isn’t really a unique viewpoint considering everyone thinks he’s a quality fullback. They mentioned another Barca boy though but I have no clue who he is.

i dont know how much Lamptey would be fetchable for though

I don’t really know either, I don’t care as much about the football manager side of the game these days. What I do know is signing Trippier would be pointless.

posted on 5/1/22

Trippier struggled to cover the ground of a Poch fullback (comparable to a Conte wingback) when he was 27/28 so I can't see him coping well with it at 31

posted on 5/1/22

In hindsight, replacing Trippier with Aurier was an awful move, Trips was not perfect and had a poor last season with us (apparently he was carrying an injury most of that season), but overall he was a good full back and would have been good as one of two RB`s.

I would take him now to replace Doherty on a short term deal being he is 31, to compete with Royal, but long term we need to find a quality pacey attacking RWB.
