Villa obviously flogged their best player for £100m which helps.
People getting too polarised here. Those wanting us to spend recognise the huge cost of relegation. It’s not so long we spent the best part of two decades away from the top table.
I would argue that you invest proportionately to protect against that, rather than sweat too much on the impact of having a slightly larger squad when everyone is fit. Nice problem to have from the comfort of mid table.
As for whether we can afford it. It’s whether we can afford not to. If we don’t have the budget, of course can get the money if radz dilutes his shares, taps up his mates, raids his granny’s piggy bank whatever. There are always ways and Leeds are now an attractive proposition (for which he deserves great credit).
Likewise ffp, I don’t know if there’s truth in those rumours but there are common ways to structure deals to defer costs
Likewise, those not wanting to spend have legitimate arguments, The biggest one for me is spending big and still going down. We’ve seen our club crippled with lunatic investments in the past.
Arguments both ways. We all want what’s best for the club. Doesn't make us cry babies, idiots or deniers, although in my case 2 out of 3 ain’t bad.

Great post. Pretty much where I am at with this too. So many options available between various extremes that people have suggested as is usually the case.
Also a very interesting point WW raises on Wood. Newcastle get an acquisition and in doing so remove a direct rival's key player.
YEP saying that we want 2 midfielders, both on loan as we risk breaking FFP rules if we brought them outright.

I'm not sure you really grasp the issue. Of course you have to consider the long-term ramifications of a signing. Short-term thinking was what caused our 16 year exodus in the first place, and whilst I'm not saying the situations are entirely comparable, the club can't just go out and spend, spend, spend because we have some injuries, without considering the long-term situation as well.
It would be great if we could sign a striker who would walk into our starting line up, even with Bamford fit. We tried that with Rodrigo. It isn't easy, and these deals become much harder in January. Same with CM. People keep saying that we should sign a CM without any actual indication that they understand it isn't as easy as that.
I appreciate that you want to to argue against polarising views, or whatever it was you said, but that isn't really what your post continues to suggest. As far as I can see, the only polarised thing on this thread are the people who understand how transfer windows work, and the people who don't.
An interesting take on what Milky stated 'I would argue you invest proportionately to protect against' (relegation) and how that statement could then be perceived as 'spend, spend, spend'. That doesn't sound like proportionate investment despite the references to raiding piggy banks
On the one hand you can argue short term thinking saw the 16 year exodus (polarising territory again with no middle ground)on the other you could argue that to not invest at all and risk going back to the very place we spent 16 years getting out of with rivals strengthening their positions is also short term thinking.
I think most reasonably minded fans on here appreciate that it is not easy to get deals done in January and we've seen that but the deals don't have to be big ticket 'Rodrigo/James' ones and could be loans and can be done.Other clubs manage it however challenging. Short term thinking for long term gains and protection.
I agree, get a couple of loans in. Still not as easy as that.
For many fans, I bet the activity of other clubs signing players, while their club seemingly does nothing,
kills the argument that "it's not easy to get deals done".
Especially when it's the clubs around their own.
It's all a risk. Whatever you do. That's football.
Seems Rob understood the point I was trying to make, Lubo, but i'm perfectly happy that you think i don't understand the issue.
Does membership of the 'I know how transfer windows work' club come with any perks beyond superior knowledge and a patronising tone?

Wood has scored 3 goals this season and been very poor, looks to me like Newcaslte buying Burnley out of the equation by taking away their no 9.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Wow I didn't think of that. Very shrewd on the part of Newcastle if that's the intention. Mind you Wood is big and burly, in the tradition of Newcastle strikers so I'd think he's a natural fit.
I think Wood will do well at Newcastle. Shrewd move.
Well there is one thing that needs answering referring to the worst 16yrs in our clubs history!..
Say that Bates, Cellino and their bumchums had other clubs instead of Leeds, and AR had Leeds for the last 16yrs, where would we be now?..
I'm not saying we'd be the best in Europe or anywhere for that matter, but I'd think we'd be a hell of a sight better of then now!..
AR may have made mistakes while he's been here, but he's put this club with the help of Bielsa back to where we want it!..
Money doesn't grow on trees its said, but not everybody is a Newcastle, whatever anybody thinks, we're moving in the right direction!..
Has anyone stopped to think about why we haven’t made any signings if it’s that simple and the productive?

Then what can we do?
Orta weaves some magic and gets in 2 loans (with no
option to buy) where the parent club takes care of most
of the financial heavy lifting (wages etc.).
And then hope we have enough to stay up. Or, sit tight
with what we have and then...hope we have enough

Normally when someone asks someone to weave some magic, it won't literally take a genie to make it happen.
Basically, rent two players (for half a season).
Palace did it with Gallagher. It's not impossible
to pull these deals off. It just requires fans to
not b*tch about them being rentals. As they help.
Faith, thank god you're not running Leeds.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Ironically we did try to pull that deal off.
There will have been a decent fee attached to that deal too.
I wonder why all clubs don't take advantage of these free players available for 6 months in January?
Of course if a player was available for single figure millions that would be as good as Gallagher it would be a no brainer for 6 months.
A player like Swift who's not as good available for a fee similar would be great too.
But if it's so easy why aren't we doing it? Your recommendation doesn't cost any money so why isn't it happening?
As for risk, you're looking at this wrong. I'm prepared to sit tight and back the plan because I think we have enough to survive. Therefore given us more strength in the summer to push on. The danger is we don't have enough and go down. but risks are necessary to grow.
There's more than one way to be positive. A 'can do' belief in the January transfer window as an opportunity to consolidate our premiership status with 11 senior players missing with acquisitions that still keep us in bounds of FFP (thinking loans)is the approach that feels the way to go here.
It's always wise to learn from history and can understand reference to the '16 years' and what that meant but it would be great to think about what we can achieve in the next 16 years and playing this window smartly would be a great start in that approach.
The person that stands to lose most from our relegation is AR. It would likely knock £100million to £200million off the valuation agreed with 49ers for the sale of the club.
I'm quite confident he will be wanting to make sure he avoids that outcome.
I wonder why all clubs don't take advantage of these free players available for 6 months in January?

You're just being a richard with a D now.

This is exactly the type of player I'm referring to and we've been linked with. There are others abroad that
I'm sure Orta's looking at.

^^^^^
I've said multiple times, I'm fine if we sit tight. It's a huge risk. But, outside of being a fan, I lose nothing financially. Radz and 49ers and sponsors, and players are the ones who'll hurt in the wallet if the risk backfires. That's why they need to be (and I'm sure they are) looking at all angles. Risk aversion be damned.
