The whole thing was an absolute mess and really embarrassing for Australia. It should not have gone out of control like that and to brandish him a risk to public health goes a bit far too. I think we'll look back on this in a few years and laugh at how ridiculous and hysterical the whole thing is.

Reality is that there should have been different entry requirements for elite athletes, like providing proof of negative covid test at the boarder and the requirement of isolating between matches... or something along those lines. That way he could turn up, play tennis, and go back to his hotel or apartment until the next match.

The whole thing stick of political showboating to be honest. But what's new there...
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Why do people keep peddling this nonsense as the reason he was deported?? When it has been pointed out numerously in the news and on here, that he lied on his immigration papers and that is the reason he is deported, which is the only correct thing to do.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Beat me to it. The embarrassment is wholly on Djokovic. Lying on the form, probably falsely doctoring his Serbian tests, forcing his employees to collude in the falsification, revealing his stupidity on his sm having potentially put other people at risk, revealing throughout that he probably entered Spain illegally, deleting all said sm, spunking money on lawyers to find a technicality when he knew he was guilty all along - the list is endless. What a phanny!
----------------------------------------------------------------------

This still make sense to me why they didn't have an elite athlete process like what we had with the footballers competing in the Champions League and international tournaments.

It is political showboating and they are trying to score points ahead of the election later this year.

The whole problem with this pandemic is that it used to be hard to see where the science stops and the politics starts, whereas now I think more and more of are starting to see where the politics starts now.

that he lied on his immigration papers and that is the reason he is deported, which is the only correct thing to do.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
the reason he was deported was because they saw him as a 'health risk', they didn't deport because of the papers, that just gave that little reason to drag the scenario out, mistakes on papers happen all the time and can be amended.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Mistakes, yes. Deliberate falsification..? Doesn’t anyone watch immigration tv shows?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Not really no, it's not on my list of shows to watch.

It’s a piece of cake - next time you head to the US make a few jokes with the immigration officer - something about learning to fly, just the take off bit and would they like a bit of the black pudding in your hand luggage?

It was Tennis Australia, and then the state of Victoria who initially granted him exemption, based on his visa application submission.

Which the federal government border force found irregularities with on arrival. And the player himself conceded he had falsified his visa application (breaching isolation after a positive test).

The court found that there had been procedural issues with his case, as border force officials coerced him into being interviewed without legal representation in the early hours of the morning. And as such ordered him to be released from detention.

Once it had been established he had falsified his visa application, there was only going to be one outcome.

Do we think that all PL players should be double vaxxed in order to play? There is a good percentage that are not. Are we therefore being rather hypocritical? Should they not be called out?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
ill-revelent

----------------------------------------------------------------------
The virus cares not for geography
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Are there any top footballers who are so vocal about it?

As far as I know they're at least fairly tactful about things.

On Australia in particular, until recently at least hit's andled the pandemic very well, despite what most people probably think life has been very much business as usual for the majority of people here in Oz. Victoria and Melbourne in particular not so much but they did at least limit deaths well and only relaxed measures when everyone above 16 had been offered and had the time to receive 2 doses of the vaccine

Not perfect by any means but in terms of pandemic response they'd be way above most nations.

Was the Djokovic saga handled well, definitely not obviously.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

What’s happening in Australia at the moment is quite frankly scary. Yes, there’s been less deaths and infections but the % of your population with natural immunity and antibodies is much lower than most Angloshpere countries
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Answer this............how many people have to die to achieve "herd immunity"? And does that really exist?
Or would you die for a fantasy that doesn't exist?
----------------------------------------------------------------------

You really are thick Ted. A complete laughing stock
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Explain?

Fully agree with the Aussie's. You can't have a sports figure known the world over publicly stating they are anti vax and won't take the jab.

This will obviously influence thousand of people, particularly youngster to do the same.

We all know vaccines' are the only way out of this pandemic, and whilst idiot's like Djokovic act that irresponsibly;y and selfishly and bring it to the world's media attention, unvaccinated people will ensure the virus continues to thrive.

I agree, we should be jabbing as many people across the world, as this is a global pandemic. This is why I think we should be donating jabs to the developing countries across the world rather than hogging them and boosting people that don't really need them, but that is another point.

Well it does make a difference. If, at the own cost of Novak D and his team, they can remain negative, isolate and participate then what is the risk to public health?

He can compete and jog on as soon as the tournament ends.

It probably says more about Australia's policy up until this point more than anything else.

I completely understand why some people are not keen on taking blanket advice from governments for their own personal health. Especially with the way government representatives have been behaving.
