Anyone wondering, the article was deleted because I meant to post it on the GT article, not this one
Yeh this is an interesting one, I generally feel the original Bungie Halos are the best, though Infinite is excellent, and imo the best 343 version, and funnily enough probably the carbon copy of those originals. And they did carry a lot of the tight gunplay to Destiny also, though I enjoyed I never really got pulled into the ecosystem.
Seems a lot of money for 1 franchise, though maybe Destiny does much better than I realise - will be intrigued to see what happens next, but like with the Blizzard acquisition this is more long term and its gonna be a few years before we really see anything
I actually see this flurry of aquisitions, especially this one. and those by MS, As a move towards developing a Netflix style Game streaming service.
Like Netflix there will be titles that are tied to the Playstation platform, and there will be other games that are available across platforms. This is where the Bungie deal comes in. It fills a Niche, and bulks up Sony's offerings.
We will see, But I fully expect to see some sort of game streaming service being made available across a number of platforms (I'm not just talking consoles)
Online platforms 100%, I am very interested to see Sonys counter part to gamepass - and what that will have to offer
But as for filling a niche - I really don't agree, Sony already have a couple that fill "futuristic space shooter".......ok they don't necessarily have enough hands on deck to be able to make the games - but I wouldn't splash $4billion on a studio, just expand an existing one.
They are also talking about bringing Destiny to the cinema........which seems odd with a genre that really hasn't ever done that well, and ironically this is announced as Halo TV series is dropping, and lets be Honesty - Destiny was Bungies attempt at Halo the gaming service, which I am guessing it has succeeded at to a degree, quick google suggests $100-$500million pa, which isn't something to scoff at but neither is it exactly Fortnite/Warzone numbers.
As I said very intrigued to where we go next, but again I personally don't see the point in this acquisition atm, as I don't think Bungie brings that much to the table.
I'm sure Sony see's it filling an important part of their future needs. This will not have been some random aquisition, but part of their much bigger long term planning.
Quite where it all fits, and how it all pans out, I have no idea.
3.6 bill for a studio that has one game.
Sony saw Microsoft buying Blizzard and panicked.
They know they are going to be losing some massive franchises once all current Bizzard deals expire so have panic bought a studio in the hopes that they can at least give them a replacment FPS as they know Killzone and Resistance are nowhere near the level needed to fill that hole
Mattyp, MS had nothing to do with Playstations buying of Bungie. These things take months, sometimes years to pull together.
As I said earlier, this is almost certainly moves being made for a Netflix type gaming service.

Pretty much what Amiga said - this started appx 6 months ago according to reports. Blizzard was more a reaction buy than this, in that MS has probably been considering a big acquisition and with its current stock price and situation saw an opportunity. As well as an incredible catalogue its basically a money printing machine if managed correctly.
