Russia have us by the balls. Our energy prices are already through the roof. If they restrict their sales of natural gas to Europe as a punishment then we are in a right mess. Russia know this.
Still feel like there will be a compromise somewhere. A diplomatic solution will be found. Nobody really wants a war.

Problem is that what Russia seem to want - Ukraine not to be in NATO is something they or the West refuse to accept - and fair enough, that’s the right of Ukraine to decide and they have my support. But I doubt they or the rest or NATO care about energy prices for the average Brit so I’m sure it’ll reach its deadly conclusion sadly.
Maybe we’ll set up a pipeline of solar energy and get it sent over at a great price π
Can they wait till after the match?
They really should just invade Russia and call Putin's bluff. I hate loudmouths. They should have tried to a get rid of him years ago. Having such a strong Dictator so close is going to be a problem for decades to come. How long till Poland is problem to them?
Anyways, they should not affect matches.
It's not about NATO, Robb. It's about preventing Ukraine from becoming a Western-style democracy. The original invasion of Donbas and Crimea was in a context where Ukraine had no intention of joining NATO but was talking to the EU about a closer relationship and a (long) pathway toward membership. For Putin's elite a democracy with rule of law, free speech and growing prosperity on the doorstep - and with close cultural links to Russia itself - is an intolerable threat to their personal power and wealth. The Russian army is on the border for political control, not for national security. All the major protagonists understand this.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
If that is the case then what can Ukraine do to stop an invasion? As in what bargaining chips do they have or was the whole intention of the troops on the border to scare the Ukrainians into deposing their leader and installing a pro Russian one? And with that not working is the only solution to save face for Putin to invade ?
Ukraine can do very little as far as I can see. They can submit to being a client state or they can resist a superior army to the best of their abilities. The West has made it clear, and both Ukraine and (despite its cynical talk of Western aggression) Russia well understand, that it sympathises but will not militarily intervene.
The only thing really on the table now is maximising Western unity to really hurt Russia economically, and as far as possible to target the pockets of the elite. Our governments have been incredibly weak in this regard. The Tory party has accepted a lot of Russian money, which also appears to have supported Brexit, and London is the world capital of Russian money laundering. Johnson suppressed the report on Russian political interference. Germany, for its part has shown zero leadership on resisting Putin, due to a mixture of self-serving economic considerations and, I think, residual queasiness about confronting Russia.
Putin derives strength from his abject cynicism that enables him to break moral laws, and by the domestic power he enjoys. But Russia is a stagnating country with an economy far weaker than its adversaries. The Russian economy is about the size of the Texan economy. Surely there are mechanisms we can use to leverage against him.
The 'saving face' thing isn't a factor as far as I can see. Putin has the tools to gaslight the international audience and to control the narrative domestically.
π I know we spoke the other day about Russia turning eastwards if there are crippling sanctions imposed and they end up working closely with China economically to make up for whatever the West do to them. I wonder if that is a possibility that helps the consequences of an invasion will it make Putin bolder in his plans to invade?
As he’s the master of misinformation he might well galvanise the Russian people against the west by stating the reason they’re not as well off as the rest of Europe is the big bad West and China is the future and they just pump their gas to China and do most of their trading with them.

I'm not Russian. It's just that I was just moving back to the UK from Russia when I signed up for the old BBC 606 forum and that's the name that came into my head. I love Russia and have lifelong friends there. Which is consistent with my loathing for a dictatorial regime that steals from and murders its neighbours and own citizens alike.

Not only is it a cash-cow for the elite but it carries the added bonus of keeping the population(s) in a continual state of fear.
The Covid narrative, the greatest fraud in the history of mankind, is clearly failing so now 'they' take us to war.
Nobody should be surprised as this is what 'they' continually do.
