An excellent article Elland. You sum up all my worst fears for our club. I'm of the opinion that if we do survive this season, it will be because other teams are worse than us, rather than us putting a run together.

I don't know any details about the 49ers takeover, but I do wonder whether one of the conditions is for us to be in the EPL.

Good article Elland, The club are definitely thinking this might be Bielsas last season and have been planning for this since before Christmas this doesnt mean they dont want him to stay but I was told a federation/DOF job back home is a possibility,
I cant imagine Leeds without Bielsa but the club is ready for its next phase of development and for me he needs to commit for two years to oversee this a year is no good,
Raphinhas not helping things at the moment his attitude on the training ground is leaving a lot to be desired and I wasnt surprised he was left out on Sunday,

5 stars from me, great article, completely agree that this summer is massive.

Agree with Don, club. should be telling Bielsa that they want him to stay but it needs to be 2 years this time.

He has built something but is part way through BUT he has love from fans, support from management and commitment from most players.

Why go somewhere else, start all over again and then find the board arent supportive (he has had that before).

Give us 2 years and we will support you even more than before.

Elland - well articulated arguments.

Its good to read such a well constructed piece that doesnt shy away from reality and ends up viewing through rose tinted spectacles.

Have to agree that one more year of Bielsa is not enough, but he only signs yearly contracts and my gut feeling is he will leave in the summer.

After that, post MB will be very different as although no one is indispensible his personality and empathy with the fan base is uniquely special.

Great article, well balanced and great insight. Good point about youngsters coming in and then going awol is a valid one and not talked about enough. Gelhardt was effective as anyone in that second half but not been seen since his injury a month ago? Don’t get it.

I'll be gutted if Leeds go down because they belong in the Prem. It has been nice to see a few Leeds fans humbled this season though. I said last summer that the second season is often more difficult for clubs that have been promoted and was laughed at when I said I didn't seem them finishing above 15th this season.

Bournemouth with there 11k stadium lasted 6 seasons, we are struggling to make 2. The club isn't run properly and needs to be sorted out next season. Hopefully we win a few games in a row so we can right this mess of a season off and plan for the next one. Need changes top to bottom.

That is a very well written summary of where we are: hoping to avoid the drop - the results speak for themselves.

Absolutely agree that we have entered a phase of transition that could go either way.

I'd be very interested to hear what the Americans think about this.

Good post.

I think we'll stay up but as is the case we tend not to do things the easy way!!

As for our fans being humbled .... pah, maybe some. I think most realised this would be a tough season and it's panned out that way. I do think, as a club, we offer a lot to the prem, but we've got to earn our place I guess.

Well thought out post thank you.
I have said on other threads, I believe finishing as high as we did last season has hurt us in the long run.
Our powers that be saw it and thought staying in this league is a doddle. No need to strengthen the squad, we can just add a few U23s for the future and get by with what we have.

How wrong that is proving to be. The injuries are without doubt unlucky but as the saying goes fail to prepare and you prepare to fail. Gambling on keeping a very thin squad all fit all season was taking a huge risk. We have had a bit of luck getting Forshaw back from long term injury (something I for one did not expect). Without him our midfield would have been even more overrun.
It is a very sad reflection, but if we do go down we have only ourselves to blame

Not really sure what folk thought we would do coming up. 9th last season was a massive over achievement. Where we are now is a worry but in keeping with the majority of sides that are promoted. Without major investment the route to being a consistent top10 club is very difficult.
Enjoy the good football

The plan was always to ensure survival for the first 2 seasons. It's not a glorious achievement if we manage it. But it's better than most sides manage. Especially sides that have been out of the top flight for as long as we were. This isn't a great season. but so long as we survive it isn't a bad one either.

The club were honest about spending most of our 2 year budget in the first summer after promotion. About wanting to ensure survival for the first 2 season because historically if you can get through the first 2 seasons then your chances of avoiding relegation increase. and then crack on with the plan to push for Europe. Which will take a while longer.

We will all want and feel the need for a good summer window to improve the squad, and we have every reason to think that will be the clubs intentions. We don't want to have another season like this, we should be aiming for mid table and fully expect the club to achieve this regardless of who owns it.

Totally agree. Like everyone, just hoping we finish
17th or higher. Would make for a great celebration
after everything that's happened.

And doesn’t mean we can’t be disappointed. I’m disappointed we haven’t had a great season, like last season, or even had a good one. But survival is an OK season, not a bad one.

I think just surviving next season would be a bad one though.

Our current trajectory is downward and the next three games offer little hope of changing that direction. Whatever happens, only the players can affect results, not us. All we can do is make it as positive and constructive for them to succeed.
No-one wants to go down, but the three weakest teams will drop. If we are one of them, so be it. We will deal with the consequences if that happens. Worrying about it now will not help us or our team. All we want is for out team to get the best possible results. Then we will see where we are at the end of the season. I suspect we will need some WD40 for the squeaky bums at Brentford, though.

Even better if it was at the expense of Everton going down.

Your last sentence resonated with me.

Despite the frustrations of this season, which undoubtedly there are, i've enjoyed over the last few seasons the best football i've seen in probably 20 years (including the prem years). Such a flow, such energy and in parts a good amount of skill. Sure we're suspect at the back - more tactics than the players in my view, but i've really enjoyed watching the team.

My only reservation with all the MB ways of doing things is whether we've been truly sussed by opponents (managers) and our way is our weakness now. Without the plan B, or increase in squad depth for next season (i think we'll stay up still), then i think it'll be more of the same.
