Well not wasted completely, because I like watching football, and enjoyed at least half our games.
Our signings were a mixture.
I think Ronaldo unbalanced the team, I thought the signings of Varane and Sancho were good and expected a good season. We didn't, and while not blaming Ronaldo as such, I think he was instrumental in our playing poorly.
If that's true then you've basically wasted all your time since Fergie left.
surely there was a long term approach taken with Ole too, if not what was the approach
United are enduring exactly what Arsenal are enduring and ultimately what Liverpool did in the 90s - the changing of the guard.
It takes time to replace a dynasty. Everything is compared it to which makes the task all the harder.
But having gone 30 years pushing to be back at the top, I think the answer was always the manager. Everything falls into place if the right man is at the helm - mostly

Ole is comparable to when we had Roy Evans. Both were stuck looking at past glories and took the club back even further.
The 3rd then 2nd finishes in the PL under Ole will haunt you for a while yet. We aint getting anywhee near that for the next few seasons no matter who takes over. So yes ripping everything up and starting again was a waste of 3 years. Yet again.
Why is this a question? Of course we did. Bless his heart and soul but he was never up top job, nothing he was bought in to do was achieved. Didn't win anything, didn't leave us with a vastly better squad than he inherited. People say he improved morale but honestly did he really?
No I don’t think we wasted it. The only manager post SAF to get us back to back CL qualifications through the league. He also got rid of some dead wood and brought in some good players.
It’s debatable whether he was good enough long term but I think the Ronaldo transfer really screwed him and I don’t think another ageing striker was in his plans.

Is that a better achievement than Jose doing the same but with a trophy? And Jose got us out of both the CL qualifying groups. Ole never did.
Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think the time under Jose or LVG was any less a waste of time. Just that if you think that ‘achievement’ was proof Ole wasn’t a waste it’s a bit of a croc.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Very true. We should have won a trophy under Ole and he failed in that regard but it also can’t be denied Jose and LVG’s trophies were won with very favourable runs that Ole rarely or never got. Same mainly with the CL group stages.
Worse than wasted three years, he's destroyed any semblance of a winning mentality in the club and fanbase that will take decades to recover from. His enabling of failure and massaging of unproven player's ego's has allowed a 4x relegated player to think he has the clout to take on Ronaldo, a player even Karim fecking Benzema knew his place around while a player who's won nothing for this club and calls his tactics perfect after a 6-1 loss, amoung other horrors walse around posing in Cantona shirts.
In another thread a United fan declared he doesn't care about the prospect of a City treble or Liverpool quadruple, with us potentially having to give the latter a guard of honor or be the team they win it against, that's Ole's legacy right there.
As with my questions on here, it is not a binary answer.
He did some things right, some things wrong, made some good signings, made some bad signings, helped in some ways and took us backwards in others.
Some things he got right (final season aside):
Got us into the CL in both his full season.
Finished 2nd in one.
Improved our record in big games.
Strong away record.
Got us playing until the final whistle, comebacks a plenty.
Improved the dressing room after Jose's departure.
Signed Bruno and got the best out of him.
Improved Shaw, Greenwood, Pogba, Fred.
Some things he got wrong:
Sticking to a formation that wasn't working.
Poor game management.
Not firing up the players enough to perform well in the first half, leading us to chase games.
Fitness issues.
Having favourites that often under performed.
Signing defenders that didn't suit the modern game.
Allowing the Beekers deal to go through if he didn't want him.
Not dealing with the clear DM issue.
Trying to recreate the SAF/United way instead of being his own man.
Poor record against the lower teams.
Terrible 3rd season.

In inferior leagues. If they left and went on to win CL’s, PL’s or even La Liga’s I’d say something.
I see Robb continuing his hate of Ole. Just let it go man. He's no longer in the job. Your fave Jose failed yet you kept making excuses for him and the same goes for Lukaku. Just let it go. We would be here again in a few years time if Ralf isn't given the role where here really succeeded at. Our structure has been the key to holding us back. We've made so many signings that shout if desperation that you know this goes above the manager (Ighalo, Van der Beek, Canavi, and Ronaldo to name recent ones).
Fred was a player that Jose didn't want, yet United went out and signed him. Another example of what's wrong at the club.
