Possibly the most underrated player ever

No wonder it was well reported that SAF was after him for quite a while. To stay at Real for that length of time is amazing. Without research I’m guessing he’s second behind Ronaldo and ahead of Raul who’s third?

I remember when Fergie thought he was too expensive at £27m.

According to the the sites I found he's still 10 goals or so behind Raul but they could be out of date

Great player obviously, I was just wanting to know his goals to games ratio and saw the lists showing 1. C Ronaldo, 2. Raul, 3. Benzema

13 years at the club, it’s likely he’d have racked up a few goals in that time

You have to wonder what his career would've been like if he hadn't spent so much of it in the same team as Ronaldo. He played a great support role for him, but has generally stepped up since Ronaldo left

Commentator last night said he was third behind Raul and Ronaldo.

Did I hear right? Has he become the second all-time goal scorer in Real Madrid's history?

Was it the second most CL goals for Real Madrid?

I recall someone suggesting we move for him a few years ago when he was out.of favour there.

The experts on here said not good enough / too old.

Yeh, just checked and Raul is on 69 and Benzmena is now on 69,so they were tied before last night's game.

He became their third top scorer, he overtook Di Stefano. He’s unbelievable. He’d probably be number one by now if it weren’t for Ronaldo being the focal point for goals.

Hes about 14 goals behind Raul atm.

But yeah he is possibly the most underrated player of all time.

Strikers don't usually last that long at big clubs let alone Madrid and he spent a huge chunk of that time playing second fiddle. His all round game is unreal.

And he's playing his best stuff near his mid thirties.

It is a wonder, given he was very much the Rooney to Ronaldo at Real Madrid.

He will go down as a Real Madrid legend.

Didn’t realise he was so close to Raul.

I think the thing with playing as a support to Ronaldo is that it’s made him a better all round footballer. He’s the top assister Madrid’s history as well.

Playing 3rd fiddle for quite a while behind bale and ronaldo.

Showing just how good he is since those two have moved on/been phased out.

Pretty incredible really. The way he adapted his game at Real can only be admired.

Yeah it’s fantastic. He’s really stepped up in Ronaldo’s absence and Bale shrinking when having the added responsibility. He’s carried Madrid for a few years now, with a group of players that aren’t exactly in their peak.

The Benzema hype is getting a bit much now tbh. Very good player but definitely not one of the best players of his era. He has a lot of goals and assists but he’s played a huge number of games, so many players would.

As good as he’s been the last couple years, he was very much a role player during Madrid’s incredible 2011-18 run.

During their 4 UCL wins, he only scored 2 important goals in the latter stages; in a 1-0 first leg home win vs Pep’s Bayern in the 2014 SFs (which they won 5-0 on agg anyway) and then in the 2018 Final vs Liverpool where the goalie threw it at him.

He also never scored a big Classico goal in the league during the height of that rivalry w/Barca.

So there’s a reason why he was in the shade. It was always CR7, Bale, Ramos or Ozil making the big offensive plays.

Let’s also not forget that France won the World Cup without him.

Beyond all that, his game just isn’t all that. It’s pretty much straight up and down, no special effects.

Others have made the point: Benzema's statistics would look much better if he had not fulfilled the role of facilitator to Ronaldo for so many years. That's what impresses me above all about him: he's a superb striker in his own right, but has the selflessness, work rate and footballing intelligence to be a massively important component of a team built around someone else as the finisher. The fact that he has become much more prolific since Ronaldo left and in a less stellar Real Madrid reinforces this point.
