This club has never been a disappointment to me either and I have watched us get relegated three times.

We lost this game last week, today's performance was great but if we had performed better last week we may have done better. Great performance and a better team selection. Their subs improved their team ours didn't.

Didn't think we played that bad last week honestly. Real the better team but a draw wouldn't have been unfair (1-2 probably would've been the fairest result).

But on balance over both legs no question we should've gone through

Absolutely Devil, fantastic performance tonight.

Mistakes cost us 1st leg and we made RM look very ordinary tonight!

I feel no shame about us going out tonight. So much quality and character in that performance from us. Not many teams go to Madrid and give them a scare like that after messing up the first leg.

You put up a great fight, but Madrid were ahead in the tie for 140 minutes and trailed for 5.

Teams play differently when they're ahead to when they're trailing. It didn't take Madrid much time at all to score when they needed to.

Game state has an effect true.

On the other hand that statement could easily be reversed such that when Madrid needed to defend a lead they failed woefully.

The xG over the two legs was 4.1 - 2.4 in Chelsea's favour. Benzema's finishing over performance was the difference, and he is a wonderful player, but Real overall are clearly are worse team imo.

Love the team for its heroic fight back against all odds, and even going ahead at one point. Breathing real life into our dream.
The fact remains allowing a single opposition player to score 4 goals over 2 legs is a damnable dream buster.

I think that is a bit simplistic tbh. Chelsea expended a lot of energy to get to 3 0, there were some tired minds and legs at that stage and mistakes made. If Courtois doesnt make thet excellent safe to prevent it being 4-0 I don't see anyway Madrid could have suddenly found another gear. They have the quality to punish a mkistake, they did that last night and they did that at SB, but i am not buying the argument they scored when they needed to. They are not that good to be able to do that

Chelsea very impressive for the most part before they contrived to throw away the tie via Kante and missing a variety of chances.

Felt like a missed opportunity imo.

Hi, Biggish.

I didn't mean to deliver some kind of thoughtful analysis, tbh, just say something in our defence. We've had a bit of a history in recent years for making life difficult for ourselves. I was half expecting a repeat of our tie against Juve in 2018 (0-3 in Turin, 0-3 at home until a last minute penalty saved our bacon).

Few madridistas, let alone the neutrals, actually expected us to knock out the reigning European champions. We didn't even think we'd get past PSG. But we all knew that we were slightly better than last year and that Chelsea were slightly worse, and from that we took hope that we might be able to keep it tighter than last year and maybe, just maybe, capitalise on our chances.

We're mostly aware that the current Madrid side is still a way off being on a level footing with the top handful of teams in Europe, but the club has a competitive gene and an experience in the CL that sees it win a lot of ties it shouldn't if you base it solely on the quality of the football. The only way we win this thing is if we somehow avoid having to face another English side, which won't happen. But consecutive semifinals with the gaping holes in our current squad and a setup that's consisted of patching things up with masking tape for the past three seasons is more than enough reason for us to feel proud of our boys too.

Chelsea lost this tie on the back of some horrific defending, but hey-ho, we've all won a fair few thanks to our opponents failings.

Missed chances are the main story of every lost game...Could have said same about Real if the fewer chances they had...had been missed.
Come to think of it could apply to any game of any sport... Converting opportunities is what in the end, winning is about.
The rest is simply entertainment.

I agree for this RM team to reach another CL semi is worthy of note. Shows a good mentality.

You can put the spotlight on Kante, but those were both collective errors that were brought about by Madrid pressing in the right areas.

The first comes from a 3-on-1 press against the touchline. Kante arrives to provide his teammate someone to play off, but then neither of the Chelsea players (I can't tell who they are) stay make sure Kante himself has an easy out. Instead they both sprint away from the action, leaving Kante alone to find a way out against 4 white shirts.

The second begins with Reece trying to chest-control a ball between two players and playing the last centre-back into a 2-on-1 forcing him to release a first time ball into space that triggers the misunderstanding between Kante and RLC (who also pulls up in the middle of his run for the ball).

Hey, Harl!

You can talk about luck, but what about the contrast in mentality in similar circumstances?

PSG saw a two-goal lead turned into a one-goal deficit and their heads dropped completely. Both Madrid and Chelsea found themselves in the same situation, but remained resolute and found a way back.
