Think CL is more even given Liverpool's annual bye to the final, although City better side
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Last time we got to the final we had PSG and Napoli in our group and had to beat Bayern and Barca over 2 legs.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Yes bit tougher than playing Panathaniakos or Dinamo Bucharest in the 80s in semi final.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Both were better than Chelsea in the 80’s
----------------------------------------------------------------------

At times that could be true

But the truth is also that from 77-82 Italian and Spanish clubs were at their weakest ever which is why England won so many European Cups. Only German teams and St Etienne were decent.

The best teams Liverpool had to face were Gladbach and St Etienne. The strongest teams they faced in Europe they lost to: Forest 78.9 and when Italian football recovered the great Juve side of 85

And people forget Liverpool were also thrashed by unexeceptional sides: CSKA, Widsew Lodz and Dinamo

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yet here we are, the greatest English European side in history.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I think people forget that those teams weren’t bad at all back then. It’s only since the PL and CL took turned football into greed that these teams have dropped off. It’s a totally different (ruined) landscape now.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It’s only the post PL youngsters or trolls that don’t really get it…,.

Dinamo and Steaua Bucharest were top European teams at the time. Steaua won the European cup 1 in '86 against Barcelona. Those teams were better than the majority of the current top European clubs at the time. Madrid, Barca Bayern were average teams and couldn't compete.

Basically applying how those clubs are viewed now, in terms of stature, to back then. In the interest of fairness I’m going to apply how Chelsea were viewed in the 80’s to now.

Barca did compete with Steaua in 86. Bit unlucky.

CSKA and Dinamo Tbilisi got smashed in the next phase by Bayern and Hamburg after they eliminated pool.
