Thoughts after final home game

Great observations Jonty - I wouldn’t disagree with any of that. Re Rodrigo, I think many of us are baffled as to why someone touted as a natural striker isn’t placed up front - his finishing certainly couldn’t have been any worse than his passing in the first half. Having said that, Joffy has 100% earnt the right to start up front against Brentford.
I also agree about Llorente and Firpo - some players buckle under extreme pressure and I feel here are two examples. Come what may, I’d like to see these players gone next season - along with the DF who brought them here.
Regarding the manager, undoubtedly we need to unite behind him - there’s no alternative - but I can’t help feeling there’s a lack of substance there. But for now, let’s channel all our positivity into Sunday’s match. Whatever the outcome, we’ll have witnessed a(nother) momentous season in the history of Leeds United.

I don't see us getting anything at Brentford next week given that we've got two of the last fifteen points. Watching Burnley yesterday, I believe they'll get the point they need to send us down.
Lorralorimer, it has been a momentous season for all the wrong reasons, but isn't that the norm for our club? Two memorable seasons, promotion followed by a solid ninth place finish, then back to the grim reality matches against Cardiff, Millwall et al....

Sadly I agree. Don’t think Burnley will get anything vs Villa but will do enough against Newcastle. Just can’t see is negating Brentford, who are in terrific form. Monday doom and gloom for me

The leeds fans were just about to make the board aware of what they thought about them just before we scored… chants of “sack the board” and “Marcelo beilsa”…. Had we not scored would have been unpleasant scenes

Irrespective of 'it's football so anything can happen' Brentford, despite being in good form, are a decent side - nothing more - and in my opinion the worst of any of the opponents we've had since Watford.

We are absolutely capable of getting something there, and should take the second half performance yesterday as some confidence.

Only a fool would confidently predict the outcome of any of the remaining fixtures involving the relegation threatened sides. Burnley aren't playing badly and are capable of getting something at villa and at home to newcastle. Everton palace is a pick'em, you wouldn't fancy them at Arsenal but they've proved difficult to beat when parking the bus away recently.

As it stands today we could win at Brentford and go down... or lose at Brentford and stay up.

Re Gelhardt v James. Both managers have gone with James, because of his engine, pace and pressing. Put yourself in their position - do you want to win games or hare you appy losing them so you can tell the board you played their expensive signing so it's not your fault. In Bielsa's case James' was his love child, so there's an argument he was determined to make it work... but both managers?

Not having it myself. In a relegation battle with so much on the line? You pick what you believe is the best side.

Well said Milkyboy. Seems a bit of a defeatist attitude to say we will get beat at Brentford, they aren't Man City! Anything can happen with the last few matches for Burnley and Everton. We have just got to go in believing. Obviously if Burney beat Villa that will make me worry but we got to believe.

I like Struijk just not sure how mentally strong he is.
No point talking about Kalvin he was poor again and its obvious why.
Thought Joffy wasnt great at times but it only takes a second to create something as he showed, i thought he looked half a yard short at times but he hasnt played much lately so will give him the benefit of the doubt though he is another one who without Bielsa could slip into the Kalvin category as when he signed his body stats were double where they should have been and im not sure hes a natural athlete (not all of us are).
I think Raphinha for all his running about is playing a fairly safe game, quite often the ball is played into him and he hits it first time hes not putting himself in any danger for me.
Its a big week and Everton arent certain to win on Thursday with their selection problems, if they lose then i think they are the least likely of the three of us to win on Sunday.
Burnley at Villa is the key for me, if they lose i think we will be safe.

Thursday is the biggest evening of our season. It would be very helpful if Burnley lose and need to better our result on Sunday.
I'm hopeful that Everton will lose at Arsenal on Sunday, so if they only get a point on Thursday, that would be good for us too.
Brentford look impressive, so we are probably relying on Burnley messing up. But with spirit, away support and a bit of luck, you never know.
We are still odds on to go down with the bookies, but there is still hope.

Jonty you are the only person i know who uses twitter on a regular basis so was just wondering what fans are saying on clubs and radz accounts or any of the other board members. does the players use on a regular basis, has there been a barrage of complaints or insults or anything like that. Never used twitter so no idea what its like but be interested to see whats been said on it

I use it frequently and its an absolute hell hole. Lots of Geldhart fanboys, about the only positivity on there. The older folks in the supporters group are pretty positive albeit a bit blinkered.

im guessing that ordinary folk cant post on radz or clubs accounts or im sure they would be inundated with abuse. just no idea how twitter works

As always with Leeds fans there is a split.

What seems predominant is negativity rewards Marsch in terms of what he says, he connection to current situation and his tactics.

A lot of negativity towards board specifically AR being out of touch and having no money.

A lot of negativity towards Orta.

A bit of negativity creeping in re players not caring about fans, I think this was directed at Rodrigo, Llorente and Raphinha ignoring fans waiting for autographs and just driving off.

I watched the Everton v Brentford game yesterday and if Everton had kept 11 men on the field it might have been a very different story.

Rico Henry when allowed space was very dangerous and Eriksen is just Eriksen, best player on the pitch with a killer pass.

But we did show yesterday in the second half that if we get at teams of this quality level things can happen - we just might survive yet!

I'm not giving in until the mathematics tells me otherwise.

Please foe once let it be our day next Sunday.

thanks for that jonty and shaun, still dont get twitter as im old skool lol. wheres my teletext. I dont think brentford are anything special but our problem is to many players in first half yesterday looked either nervous or uninterested and didnt try to get into the game. Second half looked like jesse decided to resort to bielsas tactics and we looked a lot better and if we are to have a chance to stay up next week its how we should be playing. Someone did say yesterday could we not get bielsa back to help out for that game and while just a silly comment it still made a lot of sense. Hoping that burnley fail last 2 games wont be enough for us i think but 3 points v brentford most likely will be and if we had nicked the 3 points yesterday i reckon we would be safe now or only need at most a draw. The joys of being a leeds fan and i have a funny feeling our fate will be decided in the last few minutes of the season next week. Someone will do something in last few minutes to either save themselves or throw survival away. Wouldnt be any other way when leeds are involved so im hoping at start of next weekends match we still have it in our own hands and not depending on others so need burnley to lose v villa on thursday and hope whatever team jesse picks and whatever tactics he uses fights their hearts out and runs through walls the way they did for bielsa and keep us where we belong. Gonna be a long week and a lot of nail bitting but hopefully the footballing gods will shine on us and remove that team of cloggers burnley from PL

Brentford will massivley up their game, they'll be right on it and their fans will be backing them, screaming and crying at every good tackle on their players, they have Erickson will will pull the strings and Toney + a few other very dangerous players, they will time waste and cheat at every opportunity, like they always do against us.

We will HAVE to get tactics right from the off, we need to scrap this narrow formation and play our most dangerous players where they need to be.

All depends on what happens on Thursday, but lose there and it could well be curtains.

Brentford aren't that good .. Brighton are better imho and we could well have beaten them on Sunday (ok they could well have beaten us too ).
I think Palace will win at Goodison, which will really put the cat among the pigeons. The racist abuse dished out to Brentford players' families by some oh-so-charming Evertonians might well really fire up Viera and his players to make a point .. and they are a decent outfit.
Will Burnley get anything at Villa? Recent form suggests not.
Maybe Pontus will try to pull the shirt off Raphinha's back and not get away with it as he did with Richarlison ..
I'm feeling a darned sight more positive than I did at half-time yesterday

The midfield was a disgrace first half. Whether player or tactics can't ever remember someone getting on the ball. They didn't protect the defence nor do anything in an attacking sense

Better after the break. We finally got Phillips onto the ball

I'd honestly be tempted to sacrifice a more attacking option for Brentford. They could us apart. Maybe Shacks, Llorente, Coops, Firpo in defence. Phillips Koch Klich in midfield. Will fill it out a bit. Then Raphinha Rodrigo and Gelhardt up top.

Yes first half was horrendous at times. They got behind our back four so many times it was scary. No cover from Phillips at all. In fact he looked well off the pace most of the game. I hope both he and Raphinha give us one last massive effort on Sunday before they move on.

Brentford looked good against ten men yesterday but surely our lads will be up for this game.

And we have beaten West Ham and Wolves away. I would prefer to be playing Brentford at their place. They have lost at home to Norwich and Newcastle, and Brighton. They are beatable and our wide players can cause them problems. We should have killed them at Elland Road. Let's finish the job at their place.

Agree, should have killed them but didn’t;

Just like West Ham at home
Southampton at home
Newcastle away
Leicester home
Wolves at home

The list goes on…..

The point is, Afridi, that this is Brentford, not Real Madrid. They are beatable and it isn't so long ago we killed them at Elland Road. If we play like we did in the second half against Brighton, we can take all three points.
