League cup team out tonight

Liverpool make nine changes for tonight’s Premier League fixture with Southampton at St Mary’s.

Joe Gomez, Kostas Tsimikas and Joel Matip are named in defence, while Harvey Elliott, Curtis Jones and James Milner come into midfield.

Roberto Firmino, Diogo Jota and Takumi Minamino complete the alterations made from Saturday’s Emirates FA Cup final win over Chelsea at Wembley.

Alisson Becker and Ibrahima Konate are the only two players to retain their places in the XI.

Liverpool: Alisson, Gomez, Matip, Konate, Tsimikas, Milner, Jones, Elliott, Minamino, Jota, Firmino.

Subs: Kelleher, Thiago, Keita, Henderson, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Diaz, Robertson, Origi, Williams.

At least the back five are solid. I mean, Southampton have been absolutely awful recently so it should be enough. I would have liked a stronger midfield though.

Predictable team tonight but doesn't make me any less nervous. To be fair we've won league games with similar teams this season.

Back 4 still looks strong. Hopefully keep a clean sheet and do enough at the other end to pinch it. Big ask though.

The risk would have been playing unfit and injured players, especially with a CL final to come.

Losing (a) major player(s) so close to a final for a league we have less than 5% chance of winning is a big risk.

I think this has to be a case of judge the team (and the decisions) after the match.

Exactly, if Liverpool win 1-0 everything's fine.

If this were an early round of the FA or Carabao Cup, Liverpool would be favourites with that team, and they're favourites tonight.
