What a clusterfack that wascome on, if you get past the fact that yes it was tense and gripping, you’ll see that it was extremely stupid. The plot armour on the main characters is so thick that it removes any suspense in the show. The whole Russia storyline was completely pointless. The death of one particular character was pointless and they made that character stupid for no reason. Then there is another death that has to happen for the plot to advance but is instantly reverse because you know, another character suddenly realises they have a new power, again because the plot needs it and also plot armour. I did generally enjoy the ride but it’s just such a stupid show.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
The plot armour of Max is amazing. She should have been dead twice already, but Vekna wants to give her every chance to escape compared to the other kids he killed. Lucky for her the others tenuously worked out you need to play their favourite song to bring them back, and she always has her tape recorder with her.
Thoroughly enjoyed this season and the two-part finale!

A teenage girl having a walkman with her in the 80s is hardly a stretch.
As for what happened to Max, i actually think it is more interesting than if they just killed her off. Eleven knows Max is brain dead, completely empty. So, for El at least, Max is either dead or has been taken into the hive mind by Vecna, hence why she was so upset in the final scenes, where the others still had some hope for Max.
It leaves some interesting setups for a battle for Max's soul/conscience in S5.
Did anyone get the VH1 reference?

It was the weakest of the stories... But why do i keep seeing the word "pointless". The point was very clear, to free Hopper... It also had the side quest of attacking the UD hive mind at just the right time.
Just finished the last episode. Dragged out a bit and think they bottled out of killing some of the characters off.
Idk why people get so wound up when a show they like gets shat on. It’s kinda embarrassing tbh.

Whether it's more interesting or not, she should be dead. Vekna wanted to take as long as possible with her and seemingly give her ample time to leg it. That poor first girl he killed ended up backed up against a wall and killed just like that.
Max probably ends up in a wheelchair next season so they can tick the disability box off the woke check list.

The way I interpreted it was that Max was much harder to try and kill because the music connected her back to the things she loves, rather than focusing on the things she hates (feeling like she left billy and wanted him to die). The first girl gave into her fear and bad memories, she had given up, so was easy to kill.
I saw the whole "Vecna's curse" as an allegory about depression and suicide. Surrendering to the despair. Focusing on love and even the relief that music can bring saved Max.
You could also think that Max's previous exposure to the upside down had made her stronger. The other three had never encountered it before, so the fear and despair would have been magnified.
or it could just have been shoddy writing.

Well you can interpret anything to try and excuse the writing, but we all know it's down to the fact Max is a main character and they need it to be more of a struggle for Vekna.
I'm not necessarily calling it bad writing because it's what happens in these shows with main characters having stronger plot armour than anyone else (apart from GOT when it used to be good). It's just obviously unrealistic and inconsistent with the way the rest of the shows are.
Are you suggesting there is no allegory or analogy in stranger things? It’s all literal?
“Max probably ends up in a wheelchair next season so they can tick the disability box off the woke check list.”
They needed 4 people to die for Vecna to open the gate. Max died for 1 minute and is conveniently resurrected by Eleven (who is in ANOTHER STATE). Max survives and the gate opens. Amazing writing.

Of course but there was nothing to suggest Vekna should be taking as long as he did to kill Max off. In fact perhaps he should have been more eager to kill her off the second time after she escaped him the first time?

and if you take it all literally, then sure... it's just bad writing..
If you start to think about the depression/suicide analogy (which I am 99.99999999% sure if what it's about)... The second time around, Max is not in despair and has mentally prepared herself. Vecna then started to break her back down by showing just how dire the situation was with her friends... It was starting tow work until El showed up.
Anyway, that is the beauty and frustration about writing that is left to interpretation... but be aware that the Duffer bros certainly do have hidden meaning in their writing (and it's really not that hidden).
